To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatl, GEORGE L. MARTIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Canton, in the county of Lewis and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lVashing-htlachines; and 1 do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description'of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. v
This invention relates to washing machines provided with pivoted tubs; and it consists in the novel construction and com bination of the parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.

A is a supporting stand or frame, and B is the tub of the washing machine provided at the upper parts of its sides with pivots or trunnions Z) which are journaled in the frame A. The tub has parallel sides and has also a curved bottom provided with ribs or corrugations b. The end portions 0 of the tub are curved, and they overlap the bot tom and are provided at their upper parts with two depending crosspieces C which form water breakers or deflectors.
D is the lid of the tub which is arranged between the two crosspieces C and which consists of a fiat plate. The lid is provided with hinges (Z at one end which connect it to the tub, and d is a turn-button or other ap proved catch for fastening the lid to the tub. The lid is provided with two longitudinal slots E, and c are pivot pins which are secured to the lid crosswise of the said slots.
F is the dasher which is curved to corre spond with the bottom of the tub, and which is provided with ribs or corrugations f. The dasher F has two arms Gpivotally con nected to it by pins or boltsg. These arms project upwardly through the slots E, and are provided with longitudinal slots h which engage with the pivot pins 6. r
The extreme upper end portions ofthe arms G are provided with a crossbar a to couple them together and to afford a convenient handle for lifting the dasher. The
dasher arms are free at their upper ends, and the curved dasher has ribs j on its upper side, and the lower end portions of the dasher arms are secured between these ribs by the bolts g. Thebolts 9 permit the dasher-to be adjusted pivotally on the dasher arms, and when screwed up the bolts clamp the end portions of the dasher arms between the ribs 7 so that the dasher cannot move pivotally on the arms.
H is a handle secured to one side of the tub and affording a means'for rocking it on its pivots or trunnions.
' The water, clothes and soap are placed in the tub under the dasher, and the tub is rocked or reciprocated. The dasher is rocked by contact with the clothes, and in the same general direction as the tub but out of time with the tub, so that the clothes are rubbed between the ribbed surfaces of the dasher and tub. The water is thrown up by the curved-end portions of the tub, and is deflected onto the clothes by the crosspieces C. The slots 7t permit the dasher to slide verticallyand press by gravity on the clothes.
What I claim is 1. In a washing machine, the combination, with astand, of a tub pivoted to oscillate in the stand and provided with a curved and corrugated bottom, and a curved and corrugated dasher oscillating independent of the tub in the same direction as the tub and in a plane substantially parallel with its curved bottom, said dasher being provided with arms which are pivotally connected with the said'tub.
2. In a washing machine, the combination, with a stand, of a tub pivoted'to oscillate in the stand and provided with a curved and corrugated bottom, a lid closing the top of the tub and provided with slots, and a curved and corrugated dasher provided with arms which are pivoted to the said lid and which project through the said slots, the upper ends of the said arms being free and the said dasher being oscillated with the tub and clothes in the same direction as the tub but out of time with it.
