Description
0. S. SMALLWOOD. WINDOW SASH. APPLIOA'IION FILED 00129, 1907'.
91 1,619. Patented Feb. 9, 1909.
HHIHM 7 ,7 7
' I awa no To all who'm itmay concerm, v Beit known that I, GHARLEs S. SMALL- WOOD, citizen of the United States, residing at Ohokoloskee, in thecounty of Lee and State of Florida, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin W indow-Sashes, ofwhich the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a simple and durable construction of window sash, com rising upper and lower'rails provided wit detac able sections, ordinary stiles, and, if desired, a number of bars for supportingi a requisite number of. window panes, s'ai parts preferablyto' be construct:
ed of metal, either hollow 'or solid, thereby embodying strength, lightness, and simplicity of construction.
'lhe invention consists in certain constructions and arrangements of-parts thatl shall hereinafter fully-describe and then point out the novel features in the appended claim.
For a full understanding of theinvention,
, referenceis tobe hadto the following ,de-
scription and accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 a side elevation of my im:
proved window sash; Fig. 2 is aperspective' view of the window sash with the-detachable, sections separated from therestof the sash; and Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse-section of the sash on theline 3v"3'*of-Fig; *1 I; I Corresponding and'like partsare'referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
My. improved sash comprises the upper rail 1, the lower rail 2, the common stiles 3, and if. desired, one. or more pane-supporting bars 4,
v the opposing edges of thest1les3 and the 4Dbars 4 being provided with. grooves for accommod'ating the window'panes 5, which are slid endwise therein.
The rails 1 and 2 are formed in-their outer faces with longitudinally? extending cutaway portions recesses 6 which permit the panes to be inserted in the grooves and which terminate in inwardly facing or opposing shoulders 7, the ends of the stiles be- 111 formed in theircorresponding faces with relatively shallow recesses, as shown, winch provide outwardly facing shoulders 9. The
upper and-lower rails are provided with detachable sections 10 which fit in the cutaway portions or recesses 6, and the mner pp ea in filed. 0etober9, 1907. Serial No. 396,691.
edges of which arerecessed, as indicated at the panes and retain the same securely in position in the grooves, said sections being detachably secured to-the rails by screws or other suitable fastening means. 'lhe ends of the sections 10 overlap the adjacent ends of the stiles and are recessed in their inner surfaces to form oppositely facing shhulders 12 which bear against the corresponding opposing shoulders 7 at the terminals of the recesses 6, to prevent any lateral movement of the said, sections, saidendsof the latter also fitting in the recesses in the ends of the stiles and abutting against the outwardly facing shoulders 9 thereof to hold the respective sections against upward or downward displace- 'ment, and thus form interlocking joints with the'main ortion of the sash to rigidly secure the detac able rail sections thereto.
All edges surrounding the window panes 5 are beveled and on the outside, the lower corners of surrounding edges are notched as shown, thereby serving to drain off water flowing down said panes. I
In the manufacture of. this improved'window sash the stiles, the non-detachable parts of the rails and the bars, if any, are preferably constructed of a single piece of material while the detachable rall sections are made of separate pieces; 'I he edges of the window panes are preferably dipped in rs hite lead and'then slid into the grooves provided for them, and the detachable sections secured in ace.
I aving thus described the invention ,-what is claimedas new 1s:
, f A,WlI1' (El0,W sash comprising stiles formed their inner edges with grooves, and recessed at their ends to constitute outwardly facing shoulders, pane supporting bars interposed between the stiles and having their edges grooved and arranged to cooperate with the stiles to accommodate the window panes, upper and lower rails formed with cutaway portions to permit the panes to be mserted in the grooves and terminating ll]. opposing shoulders, and rail sections detachabl secured to the upper and lower rails and fittlng in the cut-away portions thereof with their inner edgesrecessed so as-to extend over the adjacent edges of the panes to retain the latter in the grooves,'the ends of said sections overlapping the adjacent ends of the 11, so as to extend ovcnthe adjacent ends of stiles and be'm'g recessed to 'fOim,- F facing shoulders abutting against 0 1 Waite In te'stimony whereof I afiix my signature 0 sho ik' in 'plfcfence of two \\-'1tnesses.
