Description

G. E. BOWN.
TOOL HOLDER.
APPLIUATIOK FILED HA3. 0, 1906.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES E. BOWN, OF BATTLE GREEK, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO BOWN MACHINE COMPANY, LTD., OF BATTLE CREEK, MICHIGAN.
TOOL-HOLDER.
Application filed. March 9, 1906.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES E. BowN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Battle Creek, county of Calhoun, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tool-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in tool holders.
The objects of this invention are, first, to provide an improved tool holder which may be adjusted to hold the tool at any desired angle. Second, to provide an improved tool holder embodying these advantages which may be quickly and easily adjusted to the desired position.
Further objects, and objects relatin to structural details, will definitely appear rom the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification.
The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claim.
A structure embodying the features of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which F i ure 1. is a plan of a structure embody ing the features of my invention. Fig. 2 is a etail vertical section partially in section, taken on a line corresponding to line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail partially in section, taken on a line corresponding to line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
In the drawings, the sectional views are taken looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the section lines, and similar letters of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the tool post of a lathe in which the shank B of my improved tool holder is shown clam ed. On the forward end of the shank B is a clamping head B. This clamping head is provided with a concaved seat B" in its upper face, and is also provided with a transverse opening B therethrough. This transverse opening is preferably centrally ar- Specification of Letters Patent.

ranged in regard to the seat. I arrange through this opening in the clamping head B an adjustable clamping member O. This clamping member G has a longitudinal slot C therein and a head C at its upper end. On its lower end is a nut c, by means of which it is retained in the clamping head 13.
A tool supporting block D is arranged through the slot in the adjustable member C and serves as a rest or support for the tool as E, which is also arranged through the slot. The block D is shaped on its under side to fit the concave seat in the clamping head B, as clearly appears from the drawing. This block is provided with a lug D on its under side which projects into the opening 13 in the head, thereby limiting the adjustment of the block. By adjusting this block, the angle of the tool in relation to the horizontal plane is controlled. By means of the member C, the tool may be adjusted to either side. It is evident that these adjustments may be very accurately made to secure any desired angle, taking into consideration, of course, the scope of the particular device. Set screws 0 are arran ed through the head of the clamping memher C and are adapted to engage the top of the tool, these clamping all the adjustable parts in position.
It is evident that my improved tool holder is very simple in construction and is capable of very quick and easy adjustment. I have illustrated the same in detail in the form preferred by me, although I am aware that it is capable of considerable variation without departing from my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
In a tool holder, the combination with a clamping head, having a spherically concaved seat therein and a transverse opening therethrou h, located centrally of said seat; an adjusta le clamping member having a longitudinal slot therein, arranged in said opening through said clamping head; a block shaped on its under side to fit said concaved seat in said clamping head, and
having a lug thereon projecting into said In Witness whereof, I have hereunto set opening therein, arranged throu h the slot my hand and seal in the presence of two in said adjustable clamping mem er; and a Witnesses.
pair of set screws carried by said adjustable CHARLES E. BOWN. [1... s] clampin member adapted to engage a tool Witnesses:
arrange on said block for clamping the WILL A. CADY,
parts 1n their adjusted positions. SID A. ERWIN.
