North Dakota, have invented a'new and useful Coupler foi` Traction-Engines, of which the` follow-ing 1s a s ecilication.
This inventio'nre ates lgenerally to eoiip v1ers and specifically to devices of the above.
mentioned'class which arepeculiarly adapted for use upon traction engines.
The objects of the invention are, the pro'- vision in a merchantable form, of a device of the above-mentioned lclassI which shall be inexpensive to manufacture, facile in operation and devoid of complicated parts; the
provision of detentl and releasing mechanisms of a novel form; and nally, the positioning of the com nent parts vto form a eonpact and presen blecoi'pler.
ith these objetsin v'iev'v, together with others which a perusal of this specification will reveal to those skilled inthe art, the invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described, delineated in the accompanying drawings and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that various changesin the form, proportions, size and minor details of the structure may be made without departing from the" spirit or sacrificing any' of the advantages of the invention.

In carrying out my invention, I provide a housin 1, comprising and a ase-plate 3. My invention may be attached to the draw-bar v27 of the machine of which it is a part, by any suitable method.

Shoul the detent 12 assume tlie position shown in Fi .34 when the coupling gin 19y is not en age by the detent 12,'the `etent l2 may e moved manually to the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2, when the device will be ready to receive and 'retain the pin 19. When the detent 12 occupies the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the engageto the lateral bend ofthe pin s ment of the shoulder 14'with the notch 16 will prevent the detent 12 from moving into an .extreme and inoperative position.
Having thus described my invention, my claims are as follows: 1. A coupler comprisin a housing having a vertically incised pin s ot terminating in a lateral bend; headv blocks mounted in the end of the housing upon op osite sides of the 'pin slot, the ,said head blo ks terminating rearwardly in strai ht vertical, alined faces disposed atan ang e, laterally, to the draft line of the coupler; in slidin contact with the alined faces ofthe headb ocks, a detent having an excision from one of its edges, the said excision disposedlaterally at an angle ot, the mouth of the said excision being adapted to register with the pin slot, and the terminal of the said excision being adapted to register with the lateral bend of the pin slot, alternately, in successive ositions ofthe detent; means for limiting t e movement of the detent.

In a device of the class described, a housing having a vertically incised pin-slot terminating in a lateral bend; slidably mounted in the housing, a detent having an excision from one of its edges, the said excision disposed lateral-ly at an angle to the lateral bend of thepin-slot, the mouth of the said excision adapted to register with the pin-slot, and the terminal of the said excision adapted to register with the lateral bend of the pin-slot, alternately, in successive ositions of the detent; means for limiting t e movement of the detent.
4. A coupler comprising a housing having a vertically incised pin-slot; head-blocks mounted in the end of the housin upon o posite sides ofthe pin-slot, the said headb ocks terminating rearwardly in straight, vertical, alined'faces disposed at an angle, horizontally, to the draft-line of the coupler; in sliding contact with the alined faces of the head-blocks, a detent adapted to intercept a portion of the pin-slot; means for limiting the movement of the detent.
5. ln a c'oupler, a housing having a vertically incised in-slot terminating in a lateral bend; head b ocks mounted in the end of the housing upon opposite sides of the pin-slot, the said head blocks terminating rearwardly in straight vertical alined faces disposed at an angle laterally to the draft line of the coupler, and parallel to the terminal bend of the pin slot; in sliding contact with the alined faces of the head-blocks, a detent adapted to interceptthe lateral bend of the pin slot; means for limiting the movement of the detent.
