Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM L. LATOU, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at l Yilkinsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Receptacle-Supports, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to an adjustable re ceptacle support particularly designed for supporting funnels, flasks, beakers, testtubes, retorts, jars, crucibles, and similar apparatus used in chemical laboratories.
The primary object of my invention is to provide an adjustable support for holding receptacles and funnels of various sizes.
A further object of this invention is to provide a support that can be easily adjusted to provide an opening of a desired diameter, whereby a funnel or tapering receptacle can be supported in said opening at a desired elevation.
I attain the above objects by providing a novel support that can be advantageously used in chemical laboratories and by pharmacists.
It is a well known fact that numerous sizes of funnels and receptacles are used in laboratories necessitating stands of various sizes for supporting said receptacles and funnels. I aim to eliminate a large number of stands in a laboratory by using an adjustable support that can be used in connection with a large stand for supporting a large or small receptacle. Besides supporting receptacles, I have constructed my device whereby a piece of gauze or screen can be attached to the same, also, so the support can be arranged upon a receptacle for supporting a funnel partially within the same.
With the above and other objects in view, which will readily appear as the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and 'arrangement of parts to be presently described and then specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of an adjustable receptacle support constructed in accordance with my invention, showing the same upon a stand used when filtering various liquids and solutions, Fig. 2 illustrates aside elevation of the support upon another type of stand for supporting a beaker or crucible above a Bunsen burner, Fig. 3 is a plan of a modified form of blade constituting one of the units of a shutter, Fig. 1- is a cross sectional view of the adjustable support, Fig. 5 is a plan of the same partly broken away and partly illustratingthe adjustable shutter thereof in a shifted position. Fig. 6 is a fragmentary plan of the support illustrating the supporting arms. Fig. 7 is a plan upon a smaller scale of the body or stationary disk of the support. Fig. 8 is a plan of an adjustable shutter shifting disk. Fig. 9 is a side elevation of the body or stationary disk. Fig. 10 is a similar view of the shutter shifting disk. Fig. 11 is a plan of a cover plate for the support. Fig. 12 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 13 is a plan of the outer arm shifting ring. Fig. 14 is a side elevation of the same. To put my invention into practice, I provide a circular body or stationary disk to which the various parts of my adjustable support are connected. This body or sta tionary disk comprises a rim 1, an annular seat 2 and a blade supporting ledge 3 surrounding a central opening a formed in the disk. The rim 1 is provided with a plurality of equally spaced openings 5 and 6, and with a plurality of equally spaced notches 7, these notches occupying approximately one-quarter of the periphery of said body or disk, and the objects of said openings and notches will presently appear.
The blade supporting ledge 3 is provided with a plurality of equally spaced openings 8 to accommodate and pivotally retain the depending pins 9 of a plurality of over-lapping segment shaped blades 10, as shown in i ig. 1 of the drawings.
Each blade carries at one end a depending pin 9 and at its opposite end an upwardly extending pin 11. These upwardly extending pins 11 protrude into a plurality of radially disposed slots 12 surrounding an opening 12 formed in a shutter shifting disk 13, this disk having a grooved rim 1a and a flexible or resilient handle 15. The shutter shifting disk is supported upon the annular seat 2 of the body or stationary disk and is retained in engagement thereudth by a circular cover plate 16 secured to the body or disk by screws or similar fastening means (not shown) entering the openings 6. cover plate 16 is provided with an opening 17 corresponding in diameter to the opening 12 of the disk 13 and the opening a of the body or stationary disk. '1'he rim 14 is grooved, as at 18 to receive the depending annular rib 19 of the cover plate, and is cut away as at 20 to provide stops for contacting with an upwardly extending pin 21 carried by the rim 1 contiguous to the seat 2. The juxtaposition of the pin 21 with relation to the notches 7 of the rim 1 is such as to limit the path described by a resilient handle 15 which is provided with a depending pin 22 for engaging in said notches and locking th shifting disks 18 in a position to which the same may be adjusted upon .the body or stationary disk.
Each over-lapping blade 10 corresponds when in an open position to approximately one-quarter the circumference of the openings 12?, and when these blades are shifted by the disk 13, said blades simultaneously converge to provide an opening oia desired diameter for the reception of the object to be supported. As illustrated in Figs. 5 and 6, these bladesare solid, but I reserve the right to make same skeleton shaped, .as shown in Fig. 3.
Secured to the ledge 3 of the body or sta tionary disk is a bottom plate 23, said plate being secured by screws or suitable fastening means (not shown) entering the openings 24 of the ledge 3. The bottom plate 23 is provided with a central opening and projects outwardly beneath the seat 2 and the rim 1. Upon this bottom plate is supported a shifting ring 26 movably connected to said bottom plate by a coil spring 27 mounted in the cut away portion 28 of said ring andattached to .a pin 29, carried by the bottom plate 25. The ring 26 is provided with a handle 30 and a plurality of radially disposed slots 31 Arranged upon the ring 26 beneath the rim 1 is .a plurality of segment shaped supporting arms 32, these arms being pivotally connected to the rim 1 by pins 33 entering the openings 5 of the rim 1. The arms 32 adjacent to the pins 33 are provided with depending pins 3 -53: adapted to engage in the slots 31 of a ring 26. The outer ends of the arms 32 are provided with pivoted brackets 25, these brackets having pieces of rubber or felt 36 for contacting with a receptacle, when said arms are extended to support mydevice upon a receptacle. A slight movement of the ring 28 causes the arms to swing out:- wardly and upon the handle 30 of a ring 26 being released, the arms and the ring immediately assume their normal position by virtue of the coil spring 27. It is therefore apparent that my. adjustable. support can be clamped uponthe upper edges of a recep L tacle.

oted lugs 37 for holding a piece of gauze or v (See Fig. 4). This piece of gauze or wire frame is used for supporting a beaker or crucible over a Bunsen burner, with the blades of the shutter wide open.
It is thought that my invention will be fully understood from the foregoing description, but I desire to call attention to the novel arrangement of the various elements of my invention, whereby a compact or flat structure is obtained which when made of any non-fusible material will be comparaively light and w Ll occupy small space.
The numerous advantages of my invention will be apparent to chemists and 131131 11121.- cists when evaporating, filtering, and heating liquids and filling receptacles.
The invention as above described is susceptible to such changes as are permissible by the appended claims.
Having now described my invention what I claim as new, is
-1. A device of the class described cor prising a body, having a notched rim, an annular seat and an annular ledge surrounding an opening formed in said body, a plurality of segment shaped over-lapping blades pivotally mounted upon said ledge, a slotted shifting disk mounted upon said annular seat and connecting vith said blades for moving same, a resilient handle carried by said shifting disk, at depending pin carried by said handle for engaging said notched .rim for locking said shifting disk in an adjusted position, a cover plate arranged upon said shifting disk, a bottom plate secured to said j body, a shifting ring arranged upon said bottom plate and resiliently connected thereto, a plurality of segment shaped arms arranged beneath said rim and pivotally connected thereto and to said shifting ring, a bracket pivotally connected to the free end of each arm, and a plurality of pivoted lugs carried by said bottom plate, substantially as described.
2. 5. A device of the class described comprising a circular body having a notched rim, a

A device of the class described comprising a circular body having a notched rim, a plurality of segment shaped over-lapping blades pivotally connected to said body, a shifting disk arranged upon said body and connecting with the over-lapping ends of said blades, a bottom plate connected to said body, a spring held shifting ring arranged upon said bottom plate beneath said rim, a plurality of arms arranged beneath said rim and connecting with said rim and ring, means carried by said body to limit the movement of said shifting disk, and means carried by said shifting disk for holding said disk in a fixed position with relation to said body.

A device of the class described comprising a circular body having a notched rim, a plurality of segment shaped over-lapping blades pivotally connected to said body, a shifting disk arranged upon said body and connecting with the over-lapping ends of said blades, a bottom plate connected to said body, a spring held shifting ring arranged upon said bottom plate beneath said rim, a plurality of arms arranged beneath said rim and connecting with said rim and ring, and means carried by said shifting disks for holding said disk in a fixed position with relation to said body.
8. An adjustable receptacle support comprising a body having a notched rim, a plurality of over-lapping blades pivotally connected to said body, a shifting disk arranged upon said body and connecting with the over-lapping ends of said blades, a bottom plate connected to said body, a shifting ring arranged upon said bottom plate beneath said rim, a plurality of arms arranged beneath said rim and connecting therewith and adapted to be shifted by said ring, and means carried by said shifting disk and adapted to engage said rim for holding said disk in a fixed position with relation to said body.
9. An adjustable receptacle support comprising a body having a central opening, a plurality of over-lapping blades connected to said body and adapted to regulate the size of said opening, a shifting disk arranged upon said body for moving said blades, a plurality of arms arranged beneath said body and adapted to lie Within the periphery of said body, means supported by said body for extending said arms, and means for locking said shifting disk in a fixed position with relation to said body.
