Be it known that I, ARTHUR V. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, and resident of the borough of lllanhattan. city of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rype-Writing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to typewriting machines and more especially to the line spacing mcchai'iism of such machines.
The main object ofmy invention is to provide a simplified and improved construction of the character specified.
To the above and other ends the invention consists in the features of construction. combinations of devices and arrai'igements of parts hereinafter explained and particularly 2o pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a fragmentary top plan view of a platen and its mounting, and showing my improved line spacing devices applied thereto. Fig. 2
is a side elevation of the parts shown in Fig. 1. with the platen finger wheel removed. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary front elevation of the platen and its line spacing mechanism. In the. drawings. 1 represents the frame of the machine supporting roller hearings Q with which engage guide bars 3 secured on a carriage truck 4. A. platen carrier 5 is as mounted in said truck 41, said platencarrier supports a cylindrical rotary platen 7. Operatively connected with one end of said platen is a line spacing ratchet wheel 8 provided with peripheral teeth 9 and crown teeth 10. Arranged below the ratchet wheel and cooperative with the peripheral teeth 9 is a detent roller 11 journal ed in a spring arm 12 secured by a screw 13 to the platen carrier.
The side of the platen carrier 5 adjacent to the ratchet wheel -S terminates in an arm 14 which. extends forwardly beyond the platen and near its end is curved or offset inwardly. as clearly appears in Fig. 1. A forwardly extending line spacing lever 15 is bifurcated or forked at its inner end, the arms 10 and 17 of the bifurcated portion embracing the end of the arm 11 which end is enlarged and formed with a vertical hole which serves as a journal or hearing for a pivot screw 18. The screw 18 passes through an opening in the arm 17 down through the hole. in the arm 14 and at its lower end is provided with threads which engage a threaded opening in the arm 16 of the line spacing lover. The forward end of the line spacing lever 15 is provided with a finger portion it). When the line space movement has been completed and the spring.24 is exerted to turn the lever and the pawl 21 about their-pivots backward to normal position. During the first part of the return movement the pawl is maintained in contact with the ratchet wheel by the spring. As soon as the pawl contacts with its back stop it swung away from the ratchet wheel and is turned about the pivot 18 along with the lever 15.

the finger piece '33 is turned until the face bearing the numeral 2 is uppermost, thereby bringing the stop face 31 into position to coi'perate with the line spacing pawl. The parts are so proportioned vand arranged that when the lever 15 has been pressed from the normal position represented by the dotted lines in Fig. 9 to the full line position in said figure (in which position. it will be noted, the pawl 21 hasxbeen brought into contact with the face 31 on the stop mem= her) the platen will have been turned sented by two teeth of the line spacing ratchet wheel. 7 The operations of the lover the pressure exerted on the line space lever becomes effective to move the carriage tolthe right, so that a line spacing operation of the lever 15 is released, the force of the restoring lever against the slight pressure of the spring 24 may be effected, when desired, without moving the carriage to the right. It will further be seenthat the pivot end of the line spacing pawl is contained within the line spacing lever so that said pawl is housed in said lever, while the journal or hearing of the lever is also contained within or housed in said lever, while the restoring spring 24 is beneath said pawl and for the most part out of sight of the operator. These features of construction conduce to the simple and attractive ap wrance of the mechanism.
Various changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of different parts within the scope of my invention.
"What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:-
1. in a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen frame: a rotary platen j therein: a line spacing ratchetwheel opera- 'tively connected with said platen; alin'e spacing lever pivoted on said platen frame;

When it is desired torotatc'thc platen in line spacing direction throngha triple space, represented by three teeth of the line spacing ratchet wheel, the finger piece 33 is turned until the face bearing the numeral Q 3 is uppermost, in which position, as will be seen'by reference to Fig. 10, the Stop face 32 has been brought into position to cooperate with the pawl 21 to limit the movement of the latter in line spacing direction. The parts are so proportioned that: in this relation the pawl 21 operates to turn the platen rearwardly through a distance represented by threeteeth of the ratchet: wheel 8.
It will be seen that by my invention I provide a line space mechanism which is simple and substantial in construction and appearance and certain in operation, and that the direction ,of movement of the line spacing lever, or the pull thereof, is in substantially the same direction as is the pull of the carriage when the latter is returned to begin a new line of writing, so that a single movement of the line spacing lever in one direction may be given to effect a line spacing movement of the platen and to reseen that a line spacing movement of the platen must first be effected and the pawl single spring connected directly to said pawl and operative both on said lever and on said pawl to restore them to normal position.

In a typewriting maehine, the combination of a rotary platen; a line space wheel therefor; a cotlperating line spacing pawl; a stop member which cetperates with said pawl for limiting the movement thereof in a line spacing direction; means for adjusting said stop member to afford ditfitrent extents of line space movement, said stop member being provided with numbers to indicate the particular stop face presented for cooperationwith the pawl, each number corresponding to the number of teeth of the line spacing ratchet which may be turned by the pawl when it co-acts with the stop face indicated by said number.
