To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, SAMUEL Rousn, a citi zen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Green, State of In' diana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window Pane Fae teners and I do hereby declare the following 7 to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. i
This invention relates to window pane fastening devices and in carrying out my inventlon I have 1nv1ew the obviation ofthe employment of in place and further have in view rovision of a window pane fastening strip w iich may be (placed upon the market and sold by itself an which may be applied to any ordinary Window sash now in use without in any way altering the construction of the sash such as by form ng grooves or the like therein.
One of the salient features of my invens tion resides in so constructing the pane securing strip that when secured in place, a portion of each strip will beiorced against the pane and the pane in this manner firmly held in place. This result is obtained by forming the device vof a strip of sheet metal one edge portion of whichis bent to extend normally at right angles with res eat to the body of the strip, the other edge eing bent at an acute angle with respect to the said body of the strip and having its free edge resting against the adj acentface of the first mentioned right angularly bent edge, and, by driving fastening devices such as tacks or small nails through the edge portion of the strip which is bent at an acute angle to the body portion, throughthe body portion, and into the sash it being understood that when this is done, the last 'mentioned bent edge portion will be compressed in the direction of the body of'the stri and will serve to spring the first mentione bent edge portion firmly against the adjacent faceoi' the window pane. v
Another feature of the invention resides in providing corner keys for connecting the strips at their corners :and in this manner ren ering the structure more secure. i

In the drawings, there, is illustrated a portionof a window sash, the stile being indicated by the numeral 5 and the u per rail byrthe numeral 6, the said stile an rail being formed each with-a rabbet 7 in which rabbets are received the side and upper edge's'of a pane 8 of glass; v The ipan'securing device embodying my invention is in the form of a strip 9 of resilient sheet metal which has one edge portion, throughout-its length, bent at right angles as indicated by the numeral 10 and of less width than the portion 9 and has its other edge portion bent at an acute angle as indicated by the numeral 11 the last mentioned portion being of greater width than either of the portions 9 and 10 and having its free or outer edge resting directly against the inner or adjacent face of the portion 10 at the free edge thereof. Each of the devices is formed through its body portion 9 and its bent edge portion 11 with a number of openings 12 through which tacks ornails 13 are to be driven to secure the devices to the stiles and rails of the sash.
In applying the devices embodying my invention to the window sash, the lengths of strips'are disposed in position with their portions 10 resting directly against the edge portions of the pane to be secured in place and their body portions 9 directly against that wall of the rabbet other than the one against which the pane rests. While the strips are firmly held in place, the nails 13 are driven through their portions 9 and 11 and into the said wall of the rabbet the strips being in this manner secured in place.
It-will be understood and observed from the drawings that as the nails are driven into place, the portion 11 of each of the strips will be compressed in the direction of the body portion 9, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 3 of the drawings, and that this compression of the said portion 11 will result in a strain being placed upon the portion 10 tending to resting with its free longitudinal edge against spring it from its normal position, the springing of this portion 10 serving to spring it firmly against the pane of glass and more firmlv hold the same in place and thereby prevent rattling oi the pane in windy weather or when the window sash is raised or lowered.
In order to securely hold the several strips surrounding the pane and the opening in which the pane is received, in proper relative position, I provide corner keys each of which is in the form of a flat strip of sheet metal bent to form right angularly extended portions 14 one portion being inserted in the one end of one member and in the adjacent or meeting end 01' another member the extremities of all the members or strips being beveled as indicated by the numeral 15. The employment of such corner keys is extremely desirable where the side or vertical strips are to be disposed against thin mullions as it will be dii'iicult to drive nails through such mullions without splitting them, that is nails large enough to securely hold the said strips in place.
What is claimed is:
1. A fastening strip for window panes consisting of a resilient metal plate having one longitudinal edge portion bent up inwardly at a right angle and the opposite longitudinal edge portion bent up at an acute angle and the adjacent face of the iirst named bent up portion and at an acute angle thereto, said plate having perforations through its body and the second named bent up portion for the passage oi fastening devices.
2. The combination with a window sash having a pane receiving rabbet and a pane therein, oi a pane securing strip disposed against one side oi the rabbet, the said strip having its edge adjacent the pane bent to extend at a normal right angle and having its other edge bent to extend at an acute angle with its free edge portion resting against the inner face of the first mentioned bent edge portion, and securing devices driven through the last mentioned angular-1y bent edge portion and through the strip said strip being l'ori'ned of resilient sheet metal whereby compression of the last mentioned edge portion in the direction of the body of the strip through the medium of the fastening devices will act to spring the first mentioned right angularly bent edge portion firmly against the adjacent l'ace ol the pane.
