Referring to the drawing, 10 represents the annular sleeve or case with which the other arts of the lock are assembled. It is a cyindrical drum and has its two. endsclosed by means of circular plates 11 and 12. The' plates 11 and 12 are duplicates of each other except as to the reverse position which they occupy when assembled in the drum 10 and the resulting reversal of the characters denoting the combination of the look. A description of late 11 will therefore suffice for plate 12, wit the above ex lanation in mind. The largest diameter of p ate 11 is approximately the same as the outside diameter of drum 10. The extension 14 projects into the drum 10 making a close working fit therein, The extension 14 is provided with an annular groove 15 toreceive the inner ends of retaining rivets 16 r The rivets 16, here shown as three in number, are inserted through suitable holes indrum 10 and have their inner ends approximately in contact with the bottom of groove 15, to prevent the rivets being driven throu h the drum 10 into the lock to release the plate by those attempti-n to ick the lock.
The width of t e rum 10- is such as to-provide a space; 17 between the two plates 11 and 12 when the plates and drums are assembled, as shown in Fig: 4.
I This space 17 is equal in width to the thickness of bar 181- The bar 18 is a U-shaped link 20. The link enters-the drum 10' through a suitable opening provided for that purpose inproper alinement with the space 17, and is provided adjacent to its inner end with the two op osingside In s 22. These lugs may be forme integral wit the bar or may be the projecting ends of a pin seated in-theend of the bar 18. The plates 11 and 12 'areprovided with radial grooves 23', one for eac plate, extending from the periphery'of extension 14- to the center of the inner face of the plate. The grooves 23 are lust wide enough to make a close fit with ugs 22, and their depth is approximately equal to the length or projection of the respective lugs. I
The ends of the links 20 are far enough away from the drum 10 when the link is in its maximum outer position to permit an end of the link to be passed through a staple,
or the like, withwhlch the pad-lock is to be used. The bar 18 is then pushed in, carrying the link 20 with it. The ends of the link pass through suitable holes in the drum 10,

eriphery of the drum will be marked with a line 30, and the visible peripheries of the plates 11 and 12 will be provided with index characters, here shown as numerals as already described, though letters or other characters could be employed. These numerals will be so placed with relation to the line 30, in the manufacture of the lock, that a predetermined two of them when brought to the line will dispose their disks with their grooves 23 in proper position to allow the bar 18 to be moved outwardly to unlocked osition. In the drawing, Fig. 1, the com- Eination number is 75, which means that when plates 11 and 12 are rotated so as to bring the numeral 7 of plate 11 at one end of the line 30, and the numeral 5 of the plate 12 at the other end of said line, the grooves 22 of both plates will be in the position shown in Fig. 4. The grooves 23 are shown as entering the grooves 15 owing to the thinness of the outer flange member or extension 14 but this may be obviated if desired by thickening the flange or reducing the depth of the groove 23.
This lock is applicable with obvious modifications for use on receptacles with hinged lids or to s, and the like, such as is illustrated in ig. 8, wherein the part corresponding to the bar 18 is the part 32 and is fastened to the lid and enters the drum which is mounted in the front of the box. Only one of the plates 33 is used in this modification.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and wish to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. In a combination look, a cylindrical drum, a circular plate revolubly mounted in an end of the drum, said plate having a radial slot in its inner face, said plate also having a reduced portion entering the drum and making a close working fit therein, said entering portion being circumferentially grooved, pins entering said groove to prevent the withdrawal of the plate, and a bar entering the drum back of the plate, said bar being longitudinally movable and having a lateral lug entering the slot of the plate.
2. In a combination look, a cylindrical drum, a pair of circular plates forming closures for the ends of the drum, said plates having reduced portions entering the drum and making a close working fit therein, said entering portions being circumferentially grooved, pins entering said grooves to prevent the withdrawal of the dates, the inner faces of said plates being radially grooved, a bar entering the drum and extending between the two plates, said bar having lateral projections from its inner end entering the grooves of the two plates, and the outer end of the bar carrying a link.
3. In a combination lock, a cylindrical drum, a pair of circular plates forming closures for the ends of the drum, said plates having reduced portions entering the drum and making a close working fit therein, said entering portions being circumferentially grooved, pins entering said grooves to prevent the withdrawal of the plates, the inner face of said plates being radially grooved, said grooves terminating with semi-circular ends concentric with the plate, a bar entering the drum and extending between the two plates, said bar having lateral projections from its inner end entering the grooves of the two plates, and the outer end of the bar carrying an inverted U-shaped link the ends of which are adapted to enetrate the drum in the locked position of the link.
