Description

@anni @Wire HENRY L. BREVOORT, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
Leners Patent No. 91,079, [man .new s, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN DEVICE PoR OPERATING THRoTTLENALvEs.
The Schedl'xle referred to in these Lettera Patent `and making part of the same.
To'all whom 'it may concern Be it known that lI, HENRY L. Bnnvoonr, of Brooklyn, 'in the county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Screw and Lever-Motion for Operating Valves and other purposes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, rei erence being had to the accompanying' drawing, form- -ing part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 represents a partly sectional side view of a screw, in combination with a lever, as applied to operating the regulating-valve of a locomotive-exigirle; and
Figure 2, a back or outside View of the same, seen at right angles to iig. l.
Similar letters ofreference indicate corresponding Y parts.
My invelltion consists in a certain combination of screw and lever, whereby, on engagement ofthe former with the latter, the screw may be worked to actu` ate the lever and device operated by it; also be made to serve as a stop, to hold the lever at a fixed position, and, on disengagement of the two devices, the lever may be swung to perform its work, irrespective of the Awhich has a fixed pint of suspension or attachment,
so far as restricting its movement in a longitudinal direction is concerned, but admitting of its free rotation, as by ball-and-socket joint, to a projection, b, on the end of theboiler.
This screw D is made toengage and disengage with the lever B, as required, and which may be done as follows:
Said screw is allowed to pass freely through an eye,
c, in the lever, which latter has arranged on its back a. slide, E, that forms a half-box to the screw, and is A held in gear therewith by a spring, d.
This spring is' connected with the lever B, and bears against a secondary lever or bent arm, F, which is pivoted, as at e to said lever, and has attached to it the outer end oi' the slide E. n From this description it will be seen, that in case of the valve sticking when necessary to start it, and it is dicnlt to move it by direct application of power to the lever B, or whenever, in fact, a slow or gradual motion is desirable, as, for instance, in effecting a slight or nice adjustment of the valve, then, the slide E being in gear with the screw D', the valve-stem C may be operated by turning the screw through a disk or wheel, f, on its outer end, the power applied to the screw, in such case, being communicated, through the slide or half-box E and lever B, to the valve-stem.
When a quick movement of the valve, however, is required, as, for instance, immediately after the latter has been started through the agency of the screw, as described, or at other times, when a considerable motion, in contradistinction to a mere slight adjustment,
is necessary to be given to the valve, then, by lapplying the hand to the handle-portion ofthe lever B, and so as, in clutching the latter, to close the bent arm F toward said lever, (compressing the spring Z,) the slide or half-box E is drawn out of gear with the screw D, and the lever B used independently and irrespectively of the screw, to operate the valve.
Again, after the valve has been thus moved oradj usted, by direct application of power to the lever B, itis held at its set through lock of said lever 'with the screw D, by the spring d throwing the slide E into gear with the screw, on release of the hand from grasp of the lever and bent arm F.
What is here claimed, and desired to be secured by The combination of the screw-rod D and lever B, provided with a locking-device, E, with the valve-stem C, or other analogous device, substantially as set forth.
Witnesses: A HENRY L. BREVOORT.
