WINDOW-PANE `.TQILITLX ASpeciieatiori of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 2e, 190e.
Application led June 28, 1908. Serial No. 439,996.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, NOAH FELLs, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements 'in Window-Pane Joints, of whlch the following is a specification.
This invention relates to pane securing means for glass structures .and more articularly to the uniting and securing of p ate glass windows and show cases Where at the end of the adjacent anes the mullion or rail is dispensed with and a transparent partition or buttress inserted to strengthen the glass work.
This device is especially serviceable Where glass fronts of considerable len th and made up of several sections of plate g ass are bein constructed as will be more fully described in' the following specification, set forth in illustrated in the drawings,
u Where Figure 1 is a perspective view of the uniting point of several panesY of plate glass joined by this improveddevice. Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view through the glass and the Asecuring device. Fig. 3 is a rear view from the interior of the window.
The window front in the drawings comprises the panes 5 and 6 whose ends are i 5 and 6 are of considerable size but the pane 7 may be a partition in the window'of moderf ate depth or simply a strip Whose only purpose is to form the unison and brace the window front against the wind pressure, so
that it may be deeper at 'the hase than at the tovh Y ile the panesv 5 and 6 are shown4 as being on the same plane it obvious that they may be set at a slightly acute angle to provide for window frontswhich take a curved course or for other reasons. In this form of the device the pane extending at right angles to -the two panes is provided with one or more ed es binding members A8 a proximately o? Ushap and embracing t. e edge of the pane, as shown. The remaining panes abut against the surface of the binding member, the relative dis osition of the ing such that the re atively forwar Wall 9 of the binding member 8 forward surface of the a jacent panes.
Auxiliary binding members 10 are ar- 1ranged. to bear against the surface of the said auxiliary membershaving lateral1yprojected forward ortions to bear against the inner surface o the alined panes, as at 11. The binding members 10 are provided with elongated bolt receiving slots 10. A clam ing member is designed to bear against t e outer or forward face of the alined panes, as at 12, sai'dclamp' member being preferably formed with an o set 13 to receive the projectingportion of the binding member 8 and 1t is secured to same by means of the screw 14. The auxiliary binding members 10 are izo-extensive in length with the length of the bin ing memberB, and both are directly secured to the ad'acent pane by a bolt 15 passed through of said binding members land through the pane, as shown. The binding members and auxiliary binding members are thus secured to the adjacent pane, and upon tightening the nut 16 the respective pane or strip 7. The panes anes bemembers are drawn together, with the effect to firmly secure the panes against independent movement.
It-is of course to be understood that any desired number of clamping members and cooperative parts may be used for securing the panes together, and that while preferring that the arts be constructed of metal, they may with e ual effect be constructed of other materisil.
The invention while primarily applicable to show windows, and the like, where it is desirable to secure the meeting edges of large panes with as little obstruction to light penetration as possible, is equally effective 1n other situations, and such use is contemplated.
The screw 14 may be used to adjust the clamp 12 with relation to the member 8 besides connecting these two parts.
It will be seen that the offset portions 13 of the clamping member form shoulders 13 adapted to engage ortions of the members 8 adjacent to the wa l 9 to prevent rotation of said clamping member should the screw 14 casually Work loose. j
What l claim as new by Letters Patent is:
As an article of manufacture, means for uniting and securing plate glass windows comprising a bindin element of U-form roel members adapte to receive therebetween a pane of glass, a wall connecting id parallel members at one end, a clamping member disposed transversely of and desire to secure ing member 8 on each side of the latter, g said wali, a serrer engaged with said clamping member and with said Wall respectively, i passed through said parallel members to be i said clamping member having an oiset porengaged with e ane of glass between said tion to provide inwardly directed shoulders to engage the parallel members adjacent to members in their s, justed position upon the said well to prevent rotation of said elampparallel members of seid binding element.
