Specicetion of Letters Patent Patented Jan. 23, i909.
Application filed September 28, 1905A Serial No. de.
the above-mentioned class which shall be in-.
expensive to manufacture, facile in operation and devoid of' complicated parts; the provision of a locking-strip oi novel construction, and of a cam of new and improved form which shall engage the locking-strip in a secure manner; other and further objects being hereinafter made manifest, as the description of the invention progresses.
The invention consists in the novel construction and arrangeinentoi parts hereinafter described, delineated in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that divers changes in the forni, proportions, size and minor details of the structure maybe made, without 'departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages oi the invention.
Similar numerals of reference are eniployed to indicate corresponding .parts throughout the several ligures of the draw` ings.
ln the accompanying drawings, Figure l. shows my invention attached to a pair of window sashes, one of which is looked to the other by means of my invention; Fig. 2 is a vertical section, the sectional plane being passed along the lace of the flange member 4, the various parts ol the device being in the ositions shown in Fig. l, the scale of the igure being somewhat enlarged thlit the construction may more readily appear; Fig. 3 is a detail perspective showing the bottoni of the cam 10.
ln carrying out my invention l provide a locking-strip l, which may be ol" any form. Preferably however, as shown, it comprises a base member 2, and disposed substantially at right angles to the base member and integral therewith, a flange member Ll. rlhe base member 2 is provided with apertures 3 through which may be passed screws er lil-ze devices adapted to fasten the base member 2 to a vertical element of an upper sash of a Window. The outer edge 7 `of the lia-nge slots 5. These slots areV L-shaped, and comprise a base portion 6 disposed substanf `tially parallel te the outer edge and a body 'portion 8 disposed substantially at right angles to the edge 7. When the slots 5 are constructed as above described, it will be seen that a shoulder 9 will be left upstanding in the lane'oi the -iange member 1.1. and disY posed etween the outer edge 7 and the base portion 6 of the slots 5. I further provide a base plate 17 having apertures through which may be passed screws 19 or other ineens adapted to attach the said beseeplate 17 to the top of a lower sash of a Window. A pivot 18 connects a earn 10 with the base plate 17.
The cain i() comprises en approximately circular body portion 11, from the periphery broader end of the wedge'being disposed at the lower end of the bearing member 15. From the periphery of the bearing member 15, a lip 16 proiects downward, substantially at right angles to'the member 15. Viewed laterally, the lip. 16 is wedp'e shaped, the base 2O oi the wedge being disposed at the upper or higher end of the bearing member 15, A thumb piece 12 projects radially from the member 11 and serves as a means whereby the cam 10 may be moved' to and from a' locked position'relative tb the locking strip 1,
in practical operatiorriz one or both oi' the sashes are raised untilfthe base 21 of the member 15 is opposite )the portion 8 -ot the slot 5. The cam 10 is'then lrotated by the thumb piece 12, The member 15 engagesv the portion 22 of thefslot 5, and, as this tion 22 ascends the bearing member 15, the lip 1o' will be forced into the base portion 6 of the slot 5. The outer edge 23 is'e( with respeet'to the vpivot 18 and thi the lip 16 will engage the'slioulder and draw the sashes together into a iirrf lock. As hcreinbeiore stated the lip 16 is wedge shaped, and the inclination of the sides of this wedge is such that when the lip 1G has engaged the shoulder 9 laterally a id brought the sashes toa ii'rxn hold, the lip 16 will have member i is provided with s plurality of g engaged the portions 22 and 24 of the slot 5 'and wedged itself iirmly therebetween'.
I have shown the locking strip 1 as ,at-y tached to the vertical element of the upper sash which divides the said 'upper sash into two parts when two panes are used in an upper sash, buti`t is lobvious that, when but a single pane is used in the up er sash, myy device may be otherwise disposed without altering its structure. Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters-Patent, is:
1. Ina device of the classdescribed, a lookin strip comprising a base member arrange for attachment to an upright element of a'windo'w sash, and a iiange member intey gral with the base member and disposed in a plane substantially at right angles thereto,
Athe liange member having in its outer edge `an L-shaped slot, the base of the slot being disposed substantially parallel tothe outer edge of the flange member and'do'wnwardly inclined, the body portion of the L-shaped slot being disposed substantially at right angies to the outer edge of the flange; a shoulder-upstanding in the plane of the iiange member integral therewith, and disposed bey tween the outer edge ofthe iiange member and the base ofthe L-shaped slot; in combination with a cam arranged for attachment to the top of a window sash and adapted'to engage the shoulder.
2. ln a device of the class described, a cam comprising an a roximately circular body portion arrangedpior pivotal mounting upon the top of a sash; a iiange rising from the body portion and rovided with an inclined upper edge; a we ge shaped bearing member projecting laterally from the upper edge of the iiange, the base of the wedge shaped bearing member being disposed at the lower` end of said member; a wed e sha ed lip depending from the edge o the Eliearing member, the base of the wedge sha ed lip being disposed at the up er end of sai member; in combination wit alocking stri having a shoulder arranged to be lateral y engaged by the li 4and an upright slot arranged to engage the liip in wedging relation.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aiiixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
HENRY H. AKERS.
