[Zl VESSES UNITE STATE PATENT FI ICE.
DWIGHT W. OUSTEB, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO CUSTER PRINTING PRESS COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
PRINTING-FEE SS.
Patented. Jan. 19, 1909.
Original application filed August 23, 1906, Serial No. 331,609. Divided and this application filed November 21,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DWIGHT W. OUsTnn, a resident of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Printing-Presses; and I do hereby declare the fol lowing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in printing presses, this application being a division of application Serial No. 331,809, filed by me August 23rd, 1906, for improvements in automatic multiplex presses, the object of the invention being to provide means for preventing off-set on the several rolls and maintain the latter clean.
With this object in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
The accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a view in longitudinal section illustrating my improvements and Fig. 2 is a detail view showing the ratchet devices for operating the shafts 62 and 63.
1 re resents the main frame of the ma chine, aving rotary supports for paper sup ply rolls 2 and 3, from either of which the paper strip can be drawn according to the work to be done, but as roll 2 is the one from which the paper is drawn in carrying out the maximum operation of the machine, we will assume this to be the supply roll in the present instance.
26, 27, 28 and 29 represent printing and ruling cylinders, each having suitable inking mechanism and contacting with the paper strip on platen cylinders 30.
A frame work 57 supports rolls 58, 59 and 60 for carrying the paper strip up and over the inking mechanism for rolls 27 and 28, and a wiper sheet 61 winds from a shaft 62 onto a shaft 63, and is held against the rolls 58, 59, and '60 by rods 64 to wipe the ink from said rolls and prevent smearing of the paper, and ratchet means is provided on one or both of the shafts 62 and 63 to move the sheet and expose clean sections thereof to the rolls.
To project the tympan sheets of the platen cylinders, I provide a slip or smut sheet 103 which is fed from a roll 10% over shaft 105,
Serial No. 344,519.
above the platen cylinders, over shaft 106 and onto roll 107. These rolls 104: and 107 are turned at proper speed by belts 108 passed around pulleys 109 at the ends of piv oted arms 110 and held against the rolls by weighted cords 111 secured to the ends of arms 1 10 and passed over pulleys 112 on the frame.
The pulleys 109 at the inner pivotal ends of arms 110 are secured on a shaft 113, having a beveled gear at one end, driven by a beveled pinion 114, on a shaft 115, which latter carries a beveled pinion 116 at its 0 posite end, driven by a beveled gear on t e shaft of the platen cylinders 30 below printing cylinder 28. The shaft 115 also carries, at its lower end, a pinion 117, which when secured to the shaft will turn the pulleys and belts in an opposite direction to that described or the position of the rolls can be reversed after the sheet has run through.
Slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of the parts described without departing from my invention, and hence I would have it understood that I do not restrict myself to the precise details set forth but consider myself at liberty to make such slight changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Lettors-Patent, is
1. In an apparatus of the character described, the combination with a series of rolls and means for feeding a sheet or strip of paper over said rolls, of shafts, ratchet mechanism thereon, a wiper web wound from one shaft to the other and held against said rolls to wipe them as the latter turn, and moved by the ratchet mechanism to present clean surfaces to the rolls.
2. In an apparatus of the character described, the combination with a platen and means for feeding a paper sheet past the same, two smut-web rolls, pivoted arms, each having one end adjacent to one of said smut-web rolls, driving means for said rolls engaging the latter to rotate them to feed the smut web, and means for operating said driving means.
3. In an apparatus of the character described, the combination with a platen cylinder, and means for feeding a sheet or strip of paper over the same, of a smut or slip web I, In testimony whereof I have signed this passed over the platen cylinder beneath the I specification in the presence of two subscrib- 10 paper, rolls on which the ends of the smut ing witnesses. web are Wound, pivoted arms, belts thereon, DWIGHT W.
