LAMP-BURNER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 19, 1909.
Application filed April 7, 1908. Serial No. 425,779.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that.I, MILTON SAVAGE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Florence, in the county of Marion and State of Kansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in La1np-Burners, 0f which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to lamp burners, designed more particularly for use with lamps employed for heating incubators or hrooders, and one of the principal objects of the same is to provide an attachment which will instantly extinguish the burner when the wick is turned too high, or when the heat becomes too great.
Another object of the invention is to provide a simple attachment for lamp burners which will instantly extinguish the flame when. for any reason, the burner does not opera e properly, and becomes overheated.
These and other objects may be attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a plan view of a lamp burner provided with my safety attachment. Fig. 2 is a sectional View of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing the extinguishing members and the fusible disk for releasing the same.
Referring to the drawing for a more particular description of my invention, the numeral 1 designates a lamp burner ot' the usual construction provided with a hinged dome 2 and the usual wick tube Rivcted to the burner at opposite sides of the wick tube 3 is a brackett. provided with avertical member and pivotally connected to the member 5 are the extinguisher members 6, said members being connected to the portion 5 of the bracket by pivot pins 7 which extend through the members 5 and through holes 8 formed in the arms 9 of the extinguisher members 6. The extinguisher members (3 each provided with a flange 10, and connected to the arms 9 upon one side of said members are plates 11 provided with downturued lugs 12. A spring 13 is bent around one of the pins 7, and the ends of said spring engage the underside of the arms 9, the tension of said spring being exerted to close the extinguisher members 6 over the top of the wick tube 3 to extinguish the flame.
To hold the extinguisher members down against the tension of the spring 13, a fusible disk 14-. made of solder or other readily fusible material, is provided with a slot 15 in which the lugs 12 are engaged.
Should the burner smoke or should the wick be turned too high, the disk 1i would be quickly melted to release the lugs 12, and permit the spring 13 to throw the extinguisher members up over the top of the wick tube and put out the light.
From the foregoing it will be obvious that an extinguisher made in accordance with my invention may be applied to any form of lamp burner, and that by its use, the danger of setting fire to an incubator or to a house may be averted, owing to the fact that heat suilicient to fuse the disk 14 will instantly extinguish the lamp.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:
1. An extinguisher for lamp burners comprising two members pivotally connected togcther, a spring connected to said members, a wick tube, said spring exerting its tension to close the members over the wick tube, plates connected to the extinguisher members and provided with lugs engaged by a fusible element, said fusible element provided with a slot for engaging said lugs.
2. A safety attachment for lamp burners comprising a burner, a wick tube, a pair of extinguisher members pivotally connected to the burner upon opposite sides of the wick tube, pivot pins extending through said members, a spring connected to one of the pivot pins and having oppositely extending ends engaging the extinguisher members, plates secured to said extinguisher members and provided with downturned lugs, and a fusible disk provided with a slot to engage said lugs and hold said members against the tension of said spring.
In testimony whereof, I afliX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
MILTON SAVAGE.
