PAUL KLEMM, OF GAUTZSCH, AND LOUIS SCHOPPER, OF LEIPZIG, GERMANY.
APPARATUS FOR-TESTING BAYER-PULP.
Application filed February 28,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that'we, PAUL Kramer and LOUIS scnorrrx, subjects 'of the German Emperor, residing at Gautzsch and Leipzig, respectively, both in the German Empire, have invented certain new and useful Imrovements in Apparatus for Testing Paperulp, of which the following is a specification.
'-This invention relates to apparatus for testing paper pulp. v
Accurate determination of the quality and nature of paper pul is of the highest 'imortance to the dea er and manufacturer.
n the one hand it is essential to ascertain whether the pulp is suitable for the manufacture of the particular kind of paper required. On the other hand the pulp must be tested in the course of its treatment to accurately ascertain when it has reached the conditions suitable for the urpose in view. For performing these tests t e manufacturer or foreman has hitherto been compelled to rely on' the sensitiveness of his touch, and the accuracy ofjhis judgment. The success of the. process was. thus largely dependent on expert skill. In important cases it was necessary to make samples of paper, and subject the same to the usual tearing and bending tests. I
The present invention is based on the fact that the volume of wet paper pulp or pul mixtures, after the separation of sue amount of water as will drain naturally therefrom, is directly related to the fineness and nature of the pulp. For example, in the case of material having long fibers, which is carefully treated with blunt knives in the rag-engine, the volume of the pulp after drainage is small, notwithstanding the length of the fibers, and the pulp is suitable for the manufacture of the finer and stronger qualities of paper. The pulp is greasy. If the material is treated with sharp knives the pulp roduced is rough, even if the rags were fine y divided, and the volume after drainage is larger. The degree of plasticity and fineness can thus be reliably ascertained Specification of Letters Patent.

by simply draining the water from the pul and observing the remaining volumeQan numerical coeflicien'ts may be determined to. guide the manufacturer 1n ascertaining the f' nature and quality of the pa r which can be produced from any particu ar pulp. Apparatus suitable for the pur oses of 5; the volumetric tests described is i ustrated in the annexed drawing, in which- Figurel is a side view, partly insection, Fig. 2 a front view, and, Fig. 3 a cross-section on line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Q0
The a paratus comprises a glaps tube a carried y a clamp.b fixed toanaxle d which is rotatable in a hole ,in a' pillar d. A crank handle g fixed to the axle allows of rookin or rotating the-tube, for the purpose of unifbrmly mixing pulp and water therein. A spiritlevel may be provided to indicate j when the latter is exactly vertical, and marks may be made on the axle and pillar to enable a corresponding. adjustment of the tube is closed by a removable cap 2' on which is mounted-a cook it. the other end ofthe tube there is a sieve la and a lid 'n which is hinged at m and adapted to be held in' its closed osition by a sprn. J catch A scale is ma'rlied on the front 01. th" tu Tests can be made in various ways. The most convenient method is to place a-predetermined quantity of dry pulp, for example one gram in the tube -a, and fill the tube a with water up to the 100 c. m. mark. This forms a one per cent. mixture. The cap '5 is then replaced, with the cock h closed. The tube is then rocked to uniformly saturate and distribute the ulpin the water. Thereupon the tube is ad usted in its vertical position, so that the water can drain through the sieve In. The volume of wet pulp remaining on the sieve after the water has ceased to flow out is then ascertained by means of the scale on the tube, and alfords an indication of the qualitv of aper which can be produced from the pn p.
