LOCKING DEVICE FOR COAL-HOLE COVERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 19, 1909.
Application filed May 13, 1908. Serial No. 432,659.
1'0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY DAHM, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Edgewater, county of Hudson, State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locking Devices for Coal-Hole Covers, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to locking devices for coal hole covers and has for its object to provide a simple construction, whereby the cover can be easily, quickly and securedly locked in position, so as to make it impossible for the displacement thereof from the outside and for an access to the cellar by strangers.
As the access from the inside to the cover ordinarily is obstructed by the narrow coal chute, the locking of the cover has been hitherto accomplished by means of a chain hanging down from the cover and extending into the cellar, where it is fastened to a nail, bolt or hook. Such locking, however, has been proved ineflicient owing to the difliculty of tightening the chain so that the cover can be displaced from the outside and access can be had to the cellar. To remedy this evil I have designed a device, whereby the tightening of the chain to any extent can be easily and rapidly accomplished.
T 0 make my invention more clear the same is illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which similar reference letters denote corresponding parts and in which- Figure l is a vertical section through the coal hole and cover showing the device in operation, and Figs. 2 and 3 are details of the device.
In the drawing a denotes the cellar, b the coal hole and 0 the cover for the latter.
My locking device consists of two parts, viz: a bar cl which is rigidly secured in the wall of the cellar. This bar at its upper end is provided with an eye 6 and at its lower end with a hook f. The second part consists of a bell crank lever having a shorter arm 9 which carries a chain h terminating with a hook 2' that is adapted to be temporarily engaged with the eye 6 of the bar (Z, and the longer arm 7' of which is formed at its end with a hook is. The bell crank lever is suspended by means of a member Z from the chain m, which is attached to the lower surface of the cover 0 of the coal hole.
To lock the cover in position the hook 2' is hooked in the eye 6 of the bar d and the chain m is tightened by depressing the longer arm j of the bell crank lever. By means of an auxiliary chain a hooked to hook f of the bar (Z, the depressed arm can be secured in its depressed position. The hook 7.: being capable of engaging any member of the auxiliary chain 922 can be tightened to any desired extent.
lVhat I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In locking devices for coal hole covers, the combination with the chain suspended from the cover, of a stationary bar, a bell crank lever secured to the said chain, means attached to one arm of said lever for its engagement with the stationary bar, and means for adjustably securing the other arm of said lever to the bar, upon the depression of said arm, substantially as set forth.
2. In locking devices for coal hole covers, the combination with the chain suspended from the cover, of a stationary bar formed with an eye, a bell crank lever secured to the chain, a hook flexibly attached to one arm of said lever, and adapted to engage the eye of the stationary bar, and means secured to the bar for engaging the other arm of the lever when depressed, substantially as set forth.
3. In looking devices for coal hole covers, the combination with the chain suspended from the cover, of a stationary bar formed with an eye, a bell crank lever having a short and long arm, the latter being formed with a hook, the said lever being secured to the chain, a'hook flexibly attached to the short arm of the lever and adapted to engage the eye of the stationary bar, a chain secured to the latter and the members of which are each capable of engaging the hooked end of the long arm of the lever, substantially as set forth.
Signed at New York this 12 day of May, 1908.
HENRY DAHM.
