To all wiwm it may concern: Be it known that I, JOHN M. HANSEN, a resident of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Railway-Oar Bolsters; and'I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
This invention relates to bolsters for railway cars, such as truckbolsters.
The object of the invention is to provide a bolster which is simple and cheap of con struction and which is so designed as to effectively take care of lateral stresses due to end shock as well as the vertical load.
' The invention comprises a bolster constructed as herein described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a plan view of a part of a truck bolster constructed according to my invention; Fig. 2

. The main portion of the body of the bolster comprises an inverted trough-shaped member, preferably formed from a single integral plate, and having the top plate 1,

and the two vertical or side plates 2, saidv trough being open at the bottom as shown. The top plate 1 forms the compression member of the bolster, and the tension members are formed by suitable flanged bars, such as an le bars 4:, one riveted to the free edge of eac of the side lates 2, and preferably on the inner faces t ereof as shown, said angle bars following the contour of the edges of said side plates, and extending out to the end of the bolster. The bolster is made of greater depth at its middle so as to get sufiicient vstrength, tapering toward the ends, and having theextreme end portions formed with parallel top and bottom edges so as to give ahorizontal bearing on the springs. Preferably the top line of the bolster is straight as shown.
The trough sha ed bolster described is 'braced at the mid le portion by the center brace 7 formed as a casting and made to fit nicely within the trough shaped body, bearing against the top plate 1 thereof, and preferably having the lower and shaped to fit neatly against the angle bars 4, so that said casting practically forms a strut between the top plate of the bolster ,legs of the angle bars 1.
