Be it known that I, Jona7 HiLDn AHLGREN, a subject of the King of Sweden, residing in the borough of the Bronx, city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain` new and useful Improvements in Safety Gas- Burners, of which the following is a specilication.
My invention relates to' illuminating gas burners, and is designed to automatically effect the shutting ott' of the gas supply in case the iame is blown out or extinguished in any way other than by closing the gas iX- ture cock in the usual manner, my objectl being to obviate all danger that might otherwise result from carelessness, ignorance, wind, or othercause.
j fTheinvention consists inaspecial form of gas burner to be attached inthe ordinary way to a gas fixture provided with the usual gas cock, said gas burner being formed with an auxiliary valve which is held open, against the resistance of a spring temporarily by a drop lever when the gas isrst lighted, and then normally while the gas flame continues by an expansion device which also releases the drop lever, so that should the flame become/extinguished the auxiliary valve will be free to `close under the action of the spring as the expansion device cools ofi' and contracts, sibstantiallyas hereinafter set forth.

My safety burner is formed with a gas passage b, closed at top bythe usual burner tip t. Interposed in this passage b, is a valve seat 0, in conjunction with which is arranged a valve '0, on the innerend vof a valve rod v, the outer end of which valve rod'v, passes through a guide g, which also constitutes the screw. plug which closes the end of the latplug g, and the valve lv, is a spring s, coiled around the valve rod fu', and tending constantly to thrust the valve 1to its seat c. On the outer end of the' valve rod la', is mounted a cam disk This may be accomplished by forming the outer end of the valve stem fv, with 'a' male screw thread elf-,for engagement with a #female screw thread formed in the hub of the disk D,-a lock 'nut n, being used to bear against the disk D. By this or equivalent means the adjustment of the disk D, -upon the valve stem fv', may be'*provided for, to attain accuracy of adjustment, compensate for wear &c.
The inner side of theI disk is concave and is provided 4with an inner cam surface d. In conjunction with the peripheral cani surface d', arranged a drop lever Il, pivotally attached to the burner B, at m, and having-a long'arm preferably provided with a weight fw, to insure the fall of the lever L, when its cam arm Z2l is released fromthe cam disk D as lhereinafter described,-said weight fw, also acting as a handle to the lever.
E is an expansion tube seated at its lower extremity in a boss or-lateral extension b2, on the burner B. Suspended within and from the top'of the expansion tube E, is a rod P, thelower end 0f;which projects below the tube E and below the boss b2, and is formed with a loo 1, vor otherwise con-l structed to connect wlth a detaining arm X, pivotallyattached at m, to the burner B, and projecting therefrom into the concave inner `side of`the cam disk D, andl against the cam surface d.
'The extension tube E is made of a metal of suitable expansibility while the rod It is of a metal of a relatively less degree of expansibility, so that the lengthening of the tube E will result in the raismg ofthe outer vencl'of the detaining' arm X, against the cam surface d, of the disk D. The gas having been lighted at the tip t, the yheat of combustionsoon expands the tube E, thereby raising the rod R slightly and causing it to press the free end of the d'etaining arm X against the cam surface d, on the disk D. The slight upward movement of the free end of the detaining arm X, finally presses the disk free of the cam arm Z2, of the drop lever L, which latter immediately returns to itsW normal positiem-the detaining arm X continuing to hold the valve fv, open so long as the heat of combustion maintainsthe expansion tube extended; When the gas is turned oil' at the fixture cock a, or is eXtin ished by any other cause, the coolingan contracting of the tube E allows the spring s, to close the valve lv. Thus in case of the'extinguishing of the gas from any cause, my auxiliary valve lv, by closing automatically obviates oted all. danger from-the escape of unconsumed l 1. In a safety gas burner, the combination i of a valve, a sprlng which tends constantly to close said valve, a contact surface on the Avalve stem, a,pivoted drop lever by which the valve may be opened through the medium of said contact surface on the valve stem, a pivoted detaining arm arranged to act against a projection on the vvalve stem, va. rod connected with saiddetaining arm, and an expansion tube connected withsaid rod, for the purpose described. i

In a safety gas burner, the'combination of a valve, a spring which tends constantly to vclosesaid valve, a cam disk on `the outer end of the valve stem, a pivoted drop lever arranged to act against saldcam disk, a plvetaining arm arranged to act against said cam disk, a rod connected with said detaining arm an expansion tube connected with said rod, and means for adjusting said rod upon and with relation to sald expan sion tube, for the purpose described.
