BENTON G. STEELE, OF AKRON, OHIO.
COMBINED SKYLIGHT AND VENTILATOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 12, 1909.
Application filed September 3, 1908. Serial No. 451,589.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENTON G. STEELE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Akron, in the county of Summit and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Skylight and Ventilators; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact descrip tion of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, making a part of this specification.
'lhe object of the present invention is to provide a combined skylight and ventilator, which object is accomplished by the arrange ment of the different parts hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawing the single figure illustrates a vertical section showing the ventilator closed.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the drawing.
1n the accompanying drawing, 1 represents the vertical supporting tube or cylinder which is connected to a building in the usual manner. To this tube 1 are attached by the bolts 2 ortheir equivalents, the outward extending brackets 3, to which brackets is attached the outer casing 4, which outer casing is formed of a diameter greater than the diameter of the supporting tube or cylinder. To the top of the tube or cylinder 1 is attached the lower outwardly flared ring 5, and to the brackets 3 are attached the intermediate flared rings 6 and 7 respectively, all of which flared rings are of the usual construction and arrangement in ventilators. Directly above the supporting tube or cylinder 1 is located the metal ring 8, which metal ring is provided with the downward and inclined flange 9, to which are attached in any convenient and well known manner the clips 10, which clips are for the pu ose of holding the glass disk 11, which glass isk constitutes together with the ring 8 and its flange 9 what might be termed the ventilator damper, but for the purpose of providing a combined skylight and ventilator the glass disk 11 is provided, whereby a damper for ventilators is produced, that will not cut ofi the light regardless of the various positions into which the damper is brought as hereinafter described, and for the purpose pointed out. To the upper ventilating or flared rings 7 is attached the upward extending cylinder 12, which cylinder is provided with the outward extending flange 13, upon which flange is located the glass top or cover 14, which glass top or cover is located directly above and in allnement with the lower or damper glass disk 11, by which arrangement a combined skylight and ventilator is produced.
For the purpose of holding the glass top or cover 14 in proper position clips 15 are provided, which clips are connected to the flange 13 in any convenient and well known manner. To the upward extending cylinder 12 are attached the sheave blocks 16, and over the pulleys 17 are located the damper regulating cords 18, which cords are connected to the ring 8, by means of the clips 19 or their equivalents and members of said cords extended downward below the pulleys 17 and joined to the main cord 20 which cord is extended to any convenient place to be used in the ordinary manner for elevating and lowering the damper proper. It will be understood that by a downward pull of the main cord 20 the damper proper which consists of the ring 8 and the glass disk 11 will be moved upward and when moved upward to its full limit the ventilator will be opened but when lowered into the position shown in full lines in the drawing the ventilator will be closed. It will be understood that the cords extended over the ulleys 17 must necessarily pass through t 1e ring 8, and in order to provide for this the open ended thimbles 21 are provided, and are connected to the ring 8 in any convenient and well known manner.
It will be understood that the thimbles may be dispensed with and the same object accomplished, but for the better protection of the cords passing through the ring 8 I prefer to employ the thimbles 21, so as to better protect the cords 18 from being out.
For the purpose of providfng a stop for the damper proper the top or upper end of the tube or cylinder 1 is provided with the bead 22 or its equivalent.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a combined skylight and ventilator, the combination of a supporting tube, brackets secured to said tube, a casing secured to said brackets and an upper extending cylinder, a glass cover for said cylinder, means for holding said glass cover in fixed osition, an adjustable ring located below t e glass cover, said ring provided with a glass disk and means for adjusting the ring and glass and lowering said damper, substantially as 10 disk, substantially as and for the purpose and for the purpose specified. specified. In testimony that I claim the above, I
2. In a combined skylight and ventilator, lhave hereunto subscribed my name in the a hollow su port, brackets connected to said presenre of two Witnesses. support, a g ass cover, means for holding said BENTON G. STEELE.
glass cover and a damper provided with a Witnesses: glass disk located below and in alinement JOHN H. SPoNsELLs, with the glass cover and means for elevating F. WV. BOND.
