To all who/n it may concern.'
Be it known thnt I, Fiumi C. NnwnLL, a citizen ol the United States,res1dmg at (`leveland, in the county of Fuyahoga, inthe State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stipple Members, of which the following is a speeiiiention.
The invention relzites .to stipplo members for use primarily in display apparatusof the type shown in eopending application Seri-.1l No. 313,513, wherein it` is desired to exhibit on the face of a member the raised characters impressed against the buck of the member. The invention has for its principal objects; the provision of an improved and simplified member of the character above indicated, wherein the stipplos may be easily assembled in the body of the member arid securely held in position; and the provision of an improved eonstruttion wherein accidental withdrawal of stipples from advanced positionisavoided. Referring to the drawing, 1 is the stipple member. or plate of dark rubber romnosition provided with a great number of trensverse ioles 2, -and 2% are the stipliles which [it into the holes 2. As shown most clearly in liloures 2 and 3, the stipile consists of three parts, namely the head 4, the shank 5 and the knob (i, and the reml portion of the head is tapered back to the shank or stem in the manner indicated. The rear port-ions 7 of the openings 2 are reduced in size to prevent the passage of the knobs 6 when the device is in ordinary use.y but because of the yielding nature of the material of which the plate 1 is composed, such knobs 6 may be forced through the openings 7, and the dillieulty of doing this is reduced if the meinber 1 is sligl ltly heated. This arrangement permits of the making of the member 1 integral and also the pins or stipples 3, thus reducing the .number of parts in the device to a minimum. The stipples are preferably made of alumi num both because of its lightness and because of its color which contrasts with that of the dark composition plate. The front ends of the stipples are preferably enameled white in order to give a more decided contrast, but because of the color of the metal of the pins this enmneling does not have to be done with the same care as would be the g case il' the pins were of some other rolor, and
any wearirugT through of the enamel is not readily apparent. The provision of the tapering portions between the beads 4 :ind stems 2 permits the heads to drop to the position shown in Figure 2, and still be easily pushed back when desired. This feature of construction is advantageous in that, it obviates any accidental jarring of the stipples into rearward position during the operation of the machine. The light weight of the stipplcs employed, and the slightly yielding charactor of the material in which they work permits of a practically noiscless operation of the stipples.
Having thus described my invention and illustrated its use, what I claim :is new and desire t0 secure by Letters Patent is the following:-
1. A stipple member comprising;r a body portion provided with n plurality of closely spaced transverse holes, and a plurality of stipples therefor each provided with a head havmg aconical reduction ot the rear portion and a reduced ste-m portion.
2. A stipple member comprising a body portion provided with aplurality of closely spaced transverse holes, and a plurality of lstipples therefor euch provided with a head, n reduced stem and n taperingr intermediate portion.
3. A stipple member comprising a body portion provided with a plurality of closely f spared transverse holes, and o lurality of stipples therefor each having a re( need shank with a knob at the end thereof, the rear portion of the holes through the. member bein;r sufficiently small to normally prevent the passage of the knobs, and the material of the member beiner somewhat yielding: whereby the knobs may be forced through the holes.
4. A stipple member comprising a body portion provided with a plurality of closely spaced transverse holes, and a lurality of stipples therefor eat-h having a re uced shank with a knob at the end thereof, the rear portion of the holes through the member being sufiiciontly small to normally prevent the lll) pussug'e ol' the Limbs, und the material ol' the member being minfin-d ao be softened bythe eiiplicoion ol' heul hereby the knobs muy be forced throhfh 'rho holes'.
