Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIGE.
ROBERT BRIGGS AND PETER MUNTZINGER, OF PHILADELPHIA, PA.
IMPROVEMENT IN CENTER-VALVES OF GAS-WORKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 90,918, dated June 8, 1869.
To all 'whom 'it may concern:
lRe it known that we, ROBERT BRIGGS and PETER MUNTZINGER, both of the city of Philadelphia.7 in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Center- Valves; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specication, in which- Figure l is a top View. Fig. 2 is a crosssection on the line w of Figs. 3 and 5. Fig. 3 is a vertical section on the line y z of Figs. 1, 2, and 4. Fig. 4 is a cross-section 011 the line u v of Fig. 3, and Fig. 5 is a side elevation of a center valve or seat to be used in the connection and distribution ot coal or other gas with a set of four puriters.
The same letters refer to similar parts in all the figures. Y
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use our improvements, we will proceed to describe their construction and operation.
The body of the valve is formed by one main casting, A A, (for convenience of construction this may, for large valves, be made in two or more separate pieces bolted or otherwise secured together,) having at the bottom one mouth or opening, f, and at the top the large conical opening for the plug B, with four pairs of mouths, d e, d c, d e, d e.
Below the seat ot' the plug B an enlargenient ofthe body A forms a chamber, c c c c. Out of this chamber the mouth gis opened, and within it the projection of tubular end h h forms a cup or seat.
spaces of F and G is made by a liquid seal in When thus constructed, the passage of the iiow of gas is indicated on the several gures by arrows, it being assumed that each pair of mouths, d and c, are connected by pipes to one of a set of four puriiers, one of the four being shut oft' by the closure l l between the single mouths 7c and z' oi' the plug B.
We are aware that center-valves with ports, with and without conical seats, have been proposed and used, both in this country and in England; but
What we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the conical plug and its seat with the valve-body and its appliances, substantially as and for the purpose described.
