To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM S. A'rwoon, of the city of Montreal, in the Province of Quebec and Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Side Stakes for Cars, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to side stakes adapted to be used in the construction of steel cars.
In building steel cars of various types, it-
is necessary to support the car body against lateral and other stresses and the object of this invention is to provide an inexpensive and efficient side stake that can preferably be made of pressed steel and that will have a maximum amount of strength under compression or cross-bending with a minimum amount of material.
The device consists essentially of a steel rib of U-shape having outwardly extending flanges. The rib is preferably pressed into the desired form which comprises a pair of vertical webs connected by an integral flat top member approximately at right angles to the webs, said rib being tapered towards the bottom and top of the stake from a point near the base. The outwardly extending side flanges are adapted to be secured to the car body and the stake is provided with strengthening braces formed integral therewith near the bottom.
In the drawings which illustrate my inventionz-Figure 1 is an elevation of one end of a steel car of the hopper type showing the side stakes in position. Fig. 2 is a plan view of one of the stakes. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of one of the. stakes. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of same. Fig. 5 is a section on the line X-X of Fig. 2. Fig. 6 is an end view of the stake.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a car body of the hopper type showing the side stakes 2 riveted to the upper frame at suitable distances apart, said stakes being preferably made of pressed steel and gradually tapered in both directions from the strengthening braces 3 located near the lower end thereof as shown. The stake, which is U-shaped, consists of a pair of approximately vertical webs 4 connected by means of the integral flat top member 5 at right angles to said webs. A pair of flanges 6 extend outwardly from the webs, forming the base of the stake, said flanges being secured to the car body as well as to the under frame by means of the rivets 7. The strengthening braces 3, which are formed integral with the stake, are preferably pyramidal in form, being pressed outwardly from the vertical webs 4 in such a manner that the base rests upon the flange 6 and gradually tapers towards the top connecting member 5. The vertical webs taper ofl gradually from the strengthening members to the top of the stake, as shown, and are also reduced at the bottom as will be seen on reference to Figs. 3 and 4. The stakes are riveted to the car frame in such a manner that the braces 3, located near the bottom of the stake and forming the strongest part of same, are designed to bear the greatest lateral stress from the car body. The top member 5, connecting the vertical webs, is flat or formed at right angles to said Webs, in order that said member may have a maximum strength under compression or cross-bending with a minimum amount of material.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is l. A device of the character described comprising a pair of approximately vertical top member, integral flanges extending out wardly from said webs, and strengthening braces resting on said flanges and tapering towards the top of the webs, substantially as described.

3. A pressed steel side stake comprising a U-shaped ribbed portion formed from a pair of vertical webs connected by an integral flat top member, strenglhening braces and side flanges integral wit said Webs, said ribbed portion being tapered from the braces towards both ends of the stake.
