Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented am.- 5, 1909.
Application flled M924, 1908. Serial No. 445,262.
Clay and State of Indiana, have invented is a stretcher plate 11, said plate having a series of points or prongs 12 projecting downward therefrom, said prongs or points being arranged in rows in staggered relation, as shown'in Fig. 4. The stretcher plate is pro-.
new and useful Improvements in carpetf vided with a lug 13 having a hole 14 therein. Stretchers, of which the following is a specil Extending through the hole 14 is a screw fication. This lnventlon relates to carpet stretchers,
10 and one of the principal objects ofthe same is to provide a convenient, adjustable and efficient devlce for stretching carpets at vari- .ous angles.
tions for stretching carpets in large or small roomsat various angles lengthwlse, cross- -wise and diagonally across the room. y These and other objects may be attained '20 by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in Which,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a carpet stretcher embodying my invention. 2
is a plan view of the same. Fig; 3 is a iron tical sectionalview taken on the line 3-3. of Fig. 1, looking in the direction indicatedby the arrows. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the stretcher plate. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the bifurcated lever for operating the stretcher member.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates the extension bar. At the outer end of this bar'l is a buffer 2 of leather, rubher 0 other suitable material anddesigned for the purpose of bearing against the baseboard 0 a room and to prevent marring the same The stretcher bar 3'is mounted to slide on the extension bar 1, said bar 3 having secured at its outer end a metal'stirrup 4 which encircles the bar 1, said stirrup being secured-to the stretcher bar 3 by means of a suitable rivet 5. A similar stirrup 6 is connected to the end of the extension bar 1 by means of a suitable rivet or fastener 7, said stirrup 6 being adapted to slide upon the stretcher bar The stirrups 4 and 6 have a slight pivotal action on the fasteners 5 and 7, and hencewhen extended will bind upon the bars 1 and 3 and hold said bars/1n ad i justed position.
;briefiy described as follows:
;provided with a winged nut 16 for clamping l lever 19 having a handle 20 and bifurcated Another object-of the invention is to prol5 vide a device composed of detachable sec-t members 21 is provided with a ratchet plate 22 designed to engage the notches in the rack bar-18. The memb rs 21 have downwardly extending lugs 23 designeil to engage studs 24, one projecting from each side of the stretcher member 8.
The operation of my invention may be l'f'the room is of sufiicient area to permit the use of the extension bar '1,'the b'uifer 2 is placed against the baseboard, and the stretcher.
member 8 is pushed inward to the position shown in Fig.1. The stretcher plate 11 may be turned at the-requiredangle relatively t0 the member 8 and the winged nut 16 tightened to hold said. plate in position. The handle 20 of the-lever is then thrown to the left in Fig. 1 to extend the. stretcher memberS, after which the carpet is tacked in place. extensionbarl may be removed when the stretcher is to be used in small rooms.
My invention is of simple construction, is strong, durable and efficient in use, can be manufactured at low cost andfwill operate on all kinds of carpets.
I claim 1 A carpet stretcher comprising extensible members, a stretcher member mounted on one of said members,-a stretcher plate adjustably connected to the stretcher member, a rack bar on. one of said extensible members, and a bifurcated lever having downturned lugs to engage studs on the stretcher member, said lever having aratchet plate to engage the teeth of said rack bar.
It will beunderstood that the 56 member 8 is designed to slide upon the bar 3.
The stretcher member 8 consists of a bar in presence of two witnesses. 'havingsecured to'its inner end metal stiri rup 9. A similar stirrup 1O is'secured to the l WILLARD FAGAN' outer end of the bar 3, and thus the stretcher l Witnesses: r
