CELIA E. EVANS, or ROANOKE, VIRGINIA,
ADMINISTRATRIX OF SAMUEL J. EVANS,
DECEASED, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO CHARLES FRANCIS BYRNE, OF ROANOKE,
VIRGINIA.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 5, 1909;
Original application filed November 7. 1907, Serial No. 401,183. Divided and this application filed April 22, 1908.
Serial No. 428,652.
T 0 all whom it may. concern: I Be it known that SAMUEL J. EVANS, of Roanoke, State of Virginia, now deceased, did invent certain new and useful Improvements in Inking Mechanism for Stamp-Canceling Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to stamp canceling machines, the present application being a division of that filed by the applicant Novemher 7, 1907, #401,188, and the present invention concerns inking means for supplying ink to the marking head or roller of the canceling machine.
The invention is disclosed in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of a stamp canceling machine embodying the invention; Fig. 2
2-2 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a view of a detail.
In these drawings the marking head or roller is indicated generally at 11, and the impression platen at 12.
For inking the canceling ribs and post marking stamp an inking roller 65 carried by a shaft 66 is provided, said roller having ink supplied thereto by a distributing roll 67 mounted upon a shaft 68, this shaft being driven in any suitable manner, as by' the gearing 69 as shown in Fig. 1. Ink is supplied to the ink distributing roller 67 from a fountain 68 by means of an oscillating arm 69 carrying a pad 70 of fibrous material ada ted to take u a quantity of ink and appy it to the in distributing roll. The arm 69 is hung within the fountain by a pin 71 (passing through a slot 72 in the said arm an it is operated by means of a pin 73 on a face plate or worm wheel 7 4 journaled within the fountain, and operated by a worm 75 on a shaft 76, which is driven through bevel gearing 77, 78, from the shaft 68 of the ink distributing roller. The pin 73 works within a loop or strap 79 of the arm 69 and this gives oscillatory movement to the said arm. The arm, however, is pressed normally upwardly by a spring 79 Within the loop or strap is arranged a spring 80 to be borne upon by the pin 73 at the time that this pin is acting to press the arm towards the ink distributing roller, the pin and slot construction 71, 72 allowing longitudinal movement of the arm to press the inking pad against the roller and the spring 80 providing a cushion to take up any excess pressure from the pin 7 3. The worm 75 is connected with the shaft 76 by means of a clutch 81 operated by a lever 82, so that the inking mechanism may be thrown into or out of operation at will by simply operating this finger lever. An overflow is provided at 83 for the ink fountain, this consisting of an exterior receptacle connected with the interior of the in fountain by an opening 84 at the lower part of the said fountain. From the receptacle 83 the ink passes to a cupshaped receiver 85, from which it may be drawn off through a valve 86.
The inking roller 65 has its shaft 66 carried by a bearing bracket 65, which is pivotally connected or hinged at 66 to the inking fountain frame 66*. The purpose of this is to permit the inking roll to be adjusted towards the marking head when the fiber of said roll has been condensed or compressed to such an extent as not to contact properly therewith. The bracket or bearing for the shaft of the inking roll is therefore adjusted by means of a screw passing through a boss 67 on the frame 66 and bearing against a part of the bracket 65. This screw moves the bracket in one direction while the spring 67 moves the bracket in the other direction. Of course when the bracket 65 is adjusted to move the inking roller towards the distributing roll its position relative to the marking head is changed and it becomes necessary to adjust the bracket or frame of the inking mechanism as a Whole and this is done by loosening the screws 69 and moving the entire ink fountain with the shaft 68 and ink distributing roller 67 and the inking roller 65 towards the marking head and then the screws are again tightened to hold the parts in adjusted position. To permit the adjustment just described to take place the shaft 68 has a flexible portion therein consisting of the spring 69 between the main shaft section 68 and the section 67 X to which latter the power is applied through the train of gearing shown in 1g. 2. Each shaft section has a forked portion as at 67*, 67 to receive the ends of the spring.
What is claimed as the invention is 1. In combination in a letter marking or canceling machine, a marking;head, -means for supplying ink thereto comprising an ink fountain, an oscillating arm carrying a pad, said arm having also a backward and forward movement longitudinally and means for operating said arm to dip the pad in the ink and then by said longitudinal movement apply the ink, substantially as described.
2. In combination in a letter marking or canceling machine, inking means comprising an ink fountain, an oscillating arm carrying a pad and having in addition to its oscillat-' ing movement a reciprocatory movement longitudinally and means for operating the arm comprising a resilient member whereby the arm is forced forward under spring pressure, substantially as described.
3. In combination in a letter canceling or marking machine, a marking head, an inking mechanism comprising an oscillatory arm carrying a pad, an ink fountain, a rotary pin carrier, the pin of which works in an opening in the arm, said arm being adapted to oscillate and also reciprocate longitudinally, sub stantially as described.
4. In combination with a marking head, the ink fountain, the oscillating arm, the rotary wheel or disk having teeth, a pin on the said disk Working in an opening in the oscillatory arm, a worm for operating the toothed disk and means for operating the worm, substantially as described.
5. In combination in a canceling machine, a marking head, an inking roller, an ink fountain, an ink distributing roller between said fountain and inking roller, means for adjusting the inking roller and for adjusting the fountain With the ink distributing roller, said ink distributing roller having a flexible shaft to permit said adjustment, substantially as described.
6. In combination in a letter marking machine, a rotary marking head, an inking roller, an ink fountain, an arm having a sliding pivotal supporting connection and a rotary member having connection with the said arm to impart thereto an oscillating and a sliding movement, said arm dipping into the ink of the fountain by its oscillating movement and by its sliding movement applying the ink to the inking roller.
7. In combination in a letter marking machine, an inking roller, an ink fountain, means for applying the ink from said fountain to the inking roller consisting of an oscillating arm, a rotary member connected to the arm to oscillate the same, a Worm for operating the said rotary member, a shaft carrying the inking roller, a shaft carrying the worm and geared to the shaft of the inking roller, and a clutch controlling the o eration of the worm, substantially as described.
8. In combination with a marking head, an ink fountain, an ink distributing roller, a flexible shaft for driving the same, an oscillating arm within the ink fountain to apply the ink to the ink distributing roller, a shaft with gearing between the same and the flexible shaft of the ink distributing roller, and a Worm and worm wheel between the said shaft and the oscillating arm for operating the same, substantially as described.
9. In combination an ink distributing roller, an ink fountain, an arm pivotally and slidably mounted to apply ink to the ink distributing roller, a loop or strap on the said arm, a spring within the said loop or strap, a rotary member having a pin working Within the said loop or strap and against the spring, and means for driving the said rotary member, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
