Be it'known--that I, ANDERSON W. CAR- MICHAEL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident ofJ Savannah, in the 'county of Chatham and State of Georgia, have invented a new and Improved Apparatus for the Manufacture of Rosin Sca and the Like, of which the following is a fu clear, and exact description. y 4
This invention is an im roved apparatus for dehydrating a saponifie solution of rosin, commonly called Wet pulpy size,'in the production of hard rosin soap, which is more especially used by paper mills in the so-called sizing or waterproofing process.
n Prior to my invention, the manufacture of rosin soap without the use of an excess of sodaor carbonate of soda has been confined to soft soap containing from forty to sixty per cent. or more, of water. This soap necessarilv `has to be packed in the better class of har' wood and waterproof barrels, whereas the soap produced by m apparatus permits of its shipment in a condyensed state in cheap ine lwood boxes or barrels in which the rosin as been and is still being shipped, in addition to offering a considerable saving in freight, as substantially no waterv is transported.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both views.
Figure 1 is a vertical central sectional view through an apparatus embodying my invention for the production of hard rosin soap and the like; and Fig. 2 is a plan of the same.y
An apparatus constructed in accordance with my invention comprises a cooking vessel 5 of suitable capacity, preferably of cylindrical form and surrounded b a steam jacket 6, the latter being rovi ed with a steam su ply`7. l Journale in the center of the vesse is a vertical shaft 8, having aflixed thereto slightly below the to of the vessel, a series of radiating arms or lades providing a beater 9, and also with a fpplley or other suitable driving means 10, ed above the beater.

5 through a pipe 11, is a rotary pump 12l which discharges through a pipe 13, having. vthe discharge end thereof overhanging the vessel above the beater 9. The apparatus is also preferably provided with a supply pipe 14, lfor introducing the size into the vessel.
A mixture of certain pro ortions of rosin in its crude state, and alka i, is introduced intoftlie vessel and brought to the state of saponiication by the steam in the steam jacket. To this is added the usual proportion of water, and is commonl known as wet pulpy size, which is use for the socalled sizing or Waterproofing process by which produce paper. When the size has been consistently heated .to the point where it starts to foam' the foam beater 9 is set in action, beating ldown the foamv as it rises, keeping-it from run over the top and to waste, 'and thus liberating the vapor; at the same time the! rotary ump '12 is started and pumps the size from t e bottom of the, tank through the outlet or discharge pi e 11 and dischar es the size into the top o the tank above t e beater, thereby providing a continuous flow from the bottom to the surface of the 1i uid, which facilitates the evaporation of ghe water. This operation is continued until substantially no water remains, when the resulting product on cooling will be found to be a hard rosin soap or size of superior quality, entirely uniform in strength, purity and solubility.
Having thus described myinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In an apparatus of the character described, a vessel adapted to have heat a plied thereto, a foam beater revolub mounted in said vessel near the top thereof?, and means for withdrawing a solution contained in the vessel from the bottom thereof and discharging it therein at the top.
2. In an apparatus of the character described, a vessel having a steam jacket, a foam beater revolubly mounted in the vessel near the to thereof, and means for pumping a solution rom the bottom of the vessel and discharging it therein above said beater.
3. An apparatus of the character described, comprising a vessel adapted to contain a. solution for the manufacture of soap); 'In testimony whereof I have signed iny and to have heat applied thereto, a foam name to thlsspec'fication in the presence of beater mounted in the vessel above the nortwo subseriblng Wltnesses.
