APPLICATION FILED I13. 14. 1808.

2 SHEETS-SHEET 1..
UNITED STATEEPATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES A. JENSEN, OF BAILEY, NEBRASKA.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES A. JENSEN,
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 14:, 1908.
Patented Jan. 5, 1909.
Serial No. 421,194.
This stem 5 by means of which the belt is secured to the body of the wearer is provided a citizen of the United States, residing at g at its end with a narrow neck portion 12 Bailey, in the county of Cherry, Nebraska, have invented certain useful Improvements in Trusses; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descri tion of the invention, such as will enable ot ers skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in trusses.
The object of my invention is to provide a truss so constructed that the pressure of the pad may be regulated by the operator without disrobing as the construction ermits the pad to be adjusted through the c othing.
A further object of my invention is to pro vide a truss so constructed that the pad may be reversed permitting the truss to be adjusted to the ri ht or left side as will be de scribed more fu 1y hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings, I have shown in Figure 1 a truss constructed according to my invention showing the pad adjusted to be carried upon the left side. Fig. 2 shows a side viewwith portions removed of the pad. Fig. 3 shows a top view of the spring plate as used in my invention. Fig. 4 shows the pad as arranged when used on the right side. Fig. 5 shows an edge View of the pad disclosing the securing ears as opened, and Fig. 6 shows a top view of the spring asused in connection with my invent1on.
Referring by letter to thedrawing A shows an ordinary body belt provided at one end with the plate 2 having a series of keyslots comprising the eyes 3 and slots 4. At the opposite end this belt is provided with a stem 5 having the flattened portion 6 by means of which this stem is secured to the spring 8, this spring being held within the belt A and exerts a gentle pressure upon the abdomen of the wearer.
Approximately midlength the stem 5 is provided with a segment ratchet 10, this ratchet being semi-circular in cross section as shown in Fig. 2 and is provided with two sets of ratchet teeth, one set of teeth being inclined in one direction and the remaining teeth in opposite direction. It will be noticed that the circumference of the ratchet wheel is equally divided so as to provide the two sets of teeth a and b as shown in Fig. 2. i
State of adapted to fit into the slot 4 and the ennew and i larged head 13 bein adapted to work through the eye 3 so that the stem may be secured to the plate 2.
In connection with the belt I use a ad 14 as is usual in truss construction. 1 y pad comprises a plate 14 provided with the recurved perforated spaced sprin ears 15 which ears are adapted to engage the stem 5, the ears being located upon opposite sides of the ratchet 10, as shown in Fig. 1. The plate 14 is perforated as shown at a in Fig. 5 while each ear is provided with a perforation o and passing through the perforation o and threading into the opening a is a screw 17. The cars 15 are sufliciently resilient so that they may be sprung over the stem 5. After the ears have been carried over the stem 5 they are secured by means of the screws 17 in such a manner that on the removal of the screws the ears may be bent upward ermitting the detaching and reversing of t e pad.
Secured to the pad plate 14 by means of the screws 22 is an ear provided spring late 20 having the upstanding ears 23 an the screw openings 24 through which the screws 22 ass in securing this spring plate to the pa plate 14. The lower end of this plate 20 is bent outward and forms a s ring against pad 14 adjusted to press against the left side of the wearer. Ifit were desired that this pad should be arranged to exert a pressure upon the right side, the screws 17 are removed when the pad is detached from the stem, the belt is reversed, when the pad is again secured so that said pad will rest upon the right side of the wearer. In Fig. 4, the pad is shown in this reversed position. By means of the key slots, the body belt is given suitable adjustment.
Having thus described my said invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by U. S. Letters Patent is A truss having in combination, a body belt, a plate having ke slots secured to one end of said belt, a hoo -ended stem secured to the remaining end of said belt adapted to engage, within said key slots, a segmental ratchet secured to said stem having half its circumference provided With teeth inclined i in one direction, the teeth of the remaining circumference being inclined in opposite direction, a pad, tWo spaced spring ears seof said teeth the remaining end being en-- gaged by said spring, all arranged as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature,
cured to said pad said ears being removably in presence of tWo Witnesses.
held upon said stem upon 0 posite sides of said ratchet, a s ring late iiaving tWo upstanding ears, t e en of said plate being bent outward to form a spring, and a pawl 10 carried by said ears one end engaging one set CHARLES A. JENSEN.
Witnesses W. F. HAWKINS, W. E. BROWN.
