SHAVING DEVICE.
v I Specification of Letters Patent. 1 Patented Feb, 25, 1913 Application filed June 8, 1912.
Serial No. 702,628..
' i To all whom ztmag concern:
Be it knownthat I, F RANK C. Simian, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hamilton, in the -county of Butler: and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Shaving Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an iiii proved neck shav ing device to enable a person to shave the back of his neck and triin the edge of his back hair without the necessity of employing mirrors, the invention consisting in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
The object of the invention is'to provide an improved device of this character which is extremely cheap and simple, is strong and durable, may be readily fitted on the head and adjusted to a pe'rsonfiof any size, by means of which the desired outline of the back hair at the back of thcneck is obtained and the operation of shaving the back of the neck and trimming the hair is greatly facilitated, another ject of the invention being to provide means to protect the razor edge and prevent ,it from-becoming dulled.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 1s a side elevation of a neck shaving device constructed in accordance with my invention, showing the same in use. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail elevation, on a larger scale, of a portion oft-he outlining band. Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view of thesame on the plane indicated by the line a-a of Fig. 3. Figs. 5 and '6 are diagrams, illustrating the use of the device in shaving the back. of the neck and trimming the back hair.
In accordance. with my invention, I provide a head piece which is here shown as comprising a brow band 1 to go around'the forehead from ear to ear and a head band 2 to go over the top of the head from ear to ear. .The brow band is preferablyelastic and made of rubber and the head band 2 is also preferably elastic. The eni'sls of the brow band and head band are connected to knuckles 3 to which the upper ends'of hooks 4; arealso connected, the hooks being adapt ed to engage under the ears. An outlining band 5 is also connected at its ends to the knuckles 3 Y and} springs 6 are provided which press downwardly on the outlining band and press it against the back of the neck at the lower edge of the hair. The outmetal spring (3', a rubber s-T llpTiyhit-hisjnserted in and projects from the Aojtver edge of the spring (3 and a suitable co,ver 8. This outlining-band is curved longitudinally and is so shaped as to form a pattern for outlining the lower edge. of the'hair as it is to be cut around the back of the neck. The springs 6 by pressing downward on the outlining band hold the said band in the required position against the back of. the neck and head.
The razor is used on the back of the neck and behind the ears below the outlining band so that the outlining band gives-the desired trim or outline to the lower edge of the hair when shaving the. back of the neck. To prevent the edge'of the razor from becomingdulled by contact with the outlining band, I provide a fender 9 on the outer side of the outliningband which fender is here shown as comprising a series of wires 10 which extend from end to end of the outlining band on the outer side thereof, and are appropriately spaced apart, and balls or rollers 11 which are mounted on the said wires for rotation and are arranged in staggered relation so that the balls or rollers of each wire operate in the spaces between those of the next adjacent wire. These balls or rollers vary in size and are reduced in diameter in descending order, the largest balls or. rollers beingnear the upper edge of the outlining band and the smallest at the lower edge thereof as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. \Vhen using the razor and making down strokes, the razor blade passes over the rolling surfaces formed by the balls or rollers and is direct veddownwardly to cut the lower edge of the hair and to shave the neck, without coming in directfcontactwith the outlining band. This is indicated in the, diagram, Fig. 5. When making upstrokes with the razor, the blade comes in contact-'witlrthe lower edge of the soft rubber strip 7- of' the outlining band so that the hair is out between the edge of the razor blade and the said rubberfstrip,
as will be understood .and the rubber strip prevents injury to the razor edge.
It will be understood that the person using my improved shaving device can shave the back of his neck andtrim the lower edge of his hair very readily without assistance made inthe form, proportion and construe-- tion of the several parts without departing from the spirit of my invention and within the scope of the appended claims.
I claim 1. A shaving device of the class described comprising a head piece, means to hold the same in place on the head, an outlining band connected to the head piece and adapted to pass around the back of the neck to form the required the hair, and springs to press the outlining band downwardly against the back of the neck.
outline of the lower edge of 2'. A shaving device of the class described comprising a head piece and an outlining band, the latter being provided with a fender to protect the edge of a razor blade. I
3. A shaving device of the class described comprising a head piece and an outlining band, the latter being provided with a tender to protectthe edge of a razor blade, the said fender comprising a series of rollers mounted for rotation.
' 4. A shaving device of the class described comprising a head piece and an outlining band, the latter being provided with a fender to protect the edge of a razor blade, the
said fender comprising a series of rollers mounted for rotation, the said rollers varying in size, the largest being near the upper edge of the outlining band and the smallestat the lower edge thereof. In testimony whereof I in presence of two witnesses.
