SYSTEM FOR CONDUCTING WATER AND SEWAGE THROUGH TUNNELED STREETS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN J. EAGAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Systems for Conducting Water and Sewege Through Tunneled Streets, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in systems for conducting water and sewage through tunneled streets.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved method for conducting water through tunneled streets, particularly in those containing longitudinal tunnels wherein underground street cars are operated, the tunnel being under a sidewalk in which position it may be effectively lighted by the means known as sidewalk lights, the pipes for the conveyance of water and sewage being so constructed and placed as to form an effective means for such conveyance without the piercing of the tunnel, thereby removing liability to leakages into the tunnel or a decrease in its strength, at the same time carrying such pipes in proximity to the walls of the tunnel so as to effect a saving in excavation and permitting descent into the sewer directly from the street instead of through the tunnel. And to said ends, my invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts described and claimed in the following specification, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing.
Referring to the figures of the drawing Figure 1 represents a transverse section of an underground tunnel, placed beneath one of the sidewalks, showing my construction of the sewer as leading from a dwelling to the main longitudinal sewer and also my trou h in the tunnel for conveying water for drin ing or flushing purposes. Fig. 2 is a cross section of the tunnel showing the main sewer running at right angles to the street in proximity thereto and the manhole leading to the sewer as Well as the sediment basin, the manhole and sewer being artly broken away to illustrate the path of the sewage as indicated by the arrow, the manhole being shown on an intersecting street between sidewalks.

ing a sewer fed by the main longitudinal sewer. The sewer pipe B has a bond 3 so that the same may run directly beneath the tunnel as shown at 4 and then bend upwardly and then laterally to pipe A placed atthe customary distance in the body of the street. A manhole 6 placed on one side of the tunnel leads from the street directly to the sewer beneath.

The arrow in pipe 13 shows the course of the sewage into pipe B conducting it from such pipe B through manhole 6. The pipe 8 running from a dwelling to the main sewer pipe, has a downward bend'7 in proximity to the wall of the tunnel and thence runs laterally to the pipe A. A transverse section of a railway is shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The manhole 6 is shown in Fig. 2 as surmounted by a cover for the protection of pedestrians or animals.
In case of the breaking of pipe 10, lying in trou h 9, for the conducting of water for drin ring or flushing purposes, the Water will flow in the trough 9, so that the tunnel will answer as a conductor of water as well as a passageway for the cars running on the tracks therein.
By the use of my invention as shown, the ground under the pavement can be used for purposes other than the operation of an underground railway, and the tunnel is not obstructed by any plpe running under the pavement or a sidewalk.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A system for conducting water and sewage through tunneled streets consisting in combination with the tunnel having a longitudinal trough containing a pipe at one side of the base of said tunnel, a sewer pipe lying transversely in close proximity to said base of the tunnel, said pipe curving upwardly at one end and thence extending laterally, a manhole at one end of said tunnel leading. vertically from the sidewalk to said pipe,' and a downwardly flaring basin for sediment at the base of said manhole, said basin extending below said pipe, and a pipe running transversely over said tunnel and thence continuing downward vertically in proximity to the other side of said tunnel and i the base of said manhole extending below thence extending laterally to the main longii said pipe, and a pipe running transversely r5 tudinal sewer. over said tunnel and thence continuing 2.
