exact description thereof, reference being had 1 vmoved.
The invention is particularly adapted for use by housewives while canning fruit. When the jar is filled with the fruit at a very high temperature, it is extremely severe, in warm weather during which fruit is usually canned, for the housewife to hold the hot jar from rotation while lacing the ("a thereon. With the device I iave heroin shown, she can ilace the cap on without touching or holding the jar by hand, excepting; when the jar is placed in or removed from the holding device herein shown, as the mechanism here provided will hold the jar, means for holding and turning the cap is in common use. Therefore, this improvement relieves the canninp of fruit of much of its unpleasantness. Furthermore, it removes the danger of the jar breaking in the hands of the person placing the cap thereon and cutting and in uring the hands. Also the cap can be 'ilaced more tightly when the jar is firmly held by mechanism.
The chief feature of the invention, whereby the desired result accomplished, is in providing the apparatus with a flexible metallic band or the like adapted to extend around the jar a plural-lit of times, one end of said band being heh substantially stationary, and a lover or other means connected with the other end and ada ited to d raw and tighten the band. Another feature of the invention, contributing toward. the successful holding of the jar", is in providing the jar with two sta tionary bearings or plates provided with holes in which the jar is placed that are spar-ed apart, and the clamping band is located between said holding plates so that the band will clamp the jar without displacing the same and the bearings between the hr and stationary holding plates will be distributed to avoid breakage.

in detail the principle of my invention is herein illustrated by a frame preferably formed of wood, having a bottom that. is removably clamped to a tab e 11 by the clamps 12. There are end plates 13 to said frame, a top plate14 and sidebars 15 that are separated to leave a s nice or lonitudinul slot for the operation oi mg lever 16, whereby the device is o erated. The ever 16 is fulerumed at itsroar end to the bracket 17 secured to the device and so as to act horizontally. The clamping strap 25 at one end is secured to the pin 26 extending downwardly from a lever 16 near its fulcrum and, therefore, so as to be 'al most stationary. The clamping band is coiled twice and the other end thereof is iastened to the free end of the sprin rod '27 that is held by the bracket 28 on tie lever 16. Said band is made sufliciontly resilient to maintain its form and the coil thereof when it is relaxed remains expanded within the cylindrical casing 30 that is secured to the bottom plate and extends to the top plate, and is concentric with the vertical center of the opening in the top but is some late 10 the actuatclamped to a table, parts by dots Va what larger than the diameter of said 0 ening so that it will hold a coil of the ban 25, when expanded, in a position that will enable the jar to be readily inserted in place within said coil. In operation the device is clamped on a table or any other convenient object and a fruit jar before it is filled is put in place, as shown in Figs. 1 and2, andthcn filled. Then the lever 16 is actuated from the position shown in Fig. 3 to that shown in F1 4, which causes the band 25 to draw tightly around thefruit jar and clamp it so as to hold it from rotation. Then the rap is secured in place, said band released andthe jar removed. The jar can also be held for releasing the cap if desired by inverting the device on the table.
The clamping band releases or unwinds within, and is retained in proper place and position by the interior walls of t re hollow cylinder 30, the diameter of which is sli htly greater-than the holes 20 and 21 in the 10l(lmg or guide plates.
The device has a capacity, within the diametrical limits of the guide holes in the top and bottom plates, of firmly gripping objects of a widely varying range of diameters.
What I claim as mIy invention and desire to secure by Letters atent is:
1. Means for holding glass ars and the like from rotation which includes a frame} with a pair ofplates spaced from each other 'that surround the jar that afi'ord bearings therefor, a hand ada ted to surround the jar-When in place that is locatcdlietween said pla es and is secured substantially stationary at one end, and means for drawing the other end so as hand about the 'ar.
2.
