To ail whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN SPENCER JUN- KINs, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Seward, in the county of Westmoreland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Punching, Shearing, and Pressing Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This infention relates to punching, shearing and pressing machines, and the primary object of my invention is to provide a novel machine that can be readily used for punching, shearing and pressing sheet metal, for the production of washers, cups and blanks preplaratory for the production of certain artic es.
A further obj ect of this invention is to provide a novel machine having reciprocatory heads for punching, shearing and pressing metal, said heads being arranged to coperate or to operate independently, according to the work to be performed. In connection with one of said heads, a novel ejector or kickoff is employed for ejecting the product of the machine, while the same head is constructed to automatically eject the scrap or slugs.
With the above and other objects in vieW which will more readily appear as the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be presently described and then specifically pointed out in the ap ended claims.

To put my invention into practice, I provide a large structure or casting with a base or table 1 and an overhanging housing 2 providing a working space or throat 3 for the material to be operated upon by the machine. In the top of the machine I journal a shaft 4, and at the bottom of the machine a shaft 5, these shafts 4 and 5 protruding from the rear end of the machine, `also into the housing 2 and the base 1 respectively. Upon the shafts 4 and 5 are mounted gear wheels 6 and 7 respectively, these gear wheels meshing with a gear wheel 8 mounted upon a revoluble shaft 9 having one end journaled in the rear end of my machine, while the opposite end thereof is adapted to be coupled to a suitable operating medium, as a motor or engine (not shown). The shafts 4 and 5 adjacent to the gear wheels 6 and 7 are provided with clutches 1() and 11 of a conventional' form, these clutches being operated by bell crank levers 12 and 13 ivotaily connected t0 the side of the mac line and to a weighted bar 14, as at 15 and'16. The c0nnection at 16 is made by a pin 17 loosely connected to the side of the machine, whereby the clutch 10 can be operated independently of the clutch 11 the object of which will presently appear. The lower end of the bar 14 is pivotally connected, as at 18, to a lever 19, fulcrumed as at 20, upon a stud post 21 carried by the side of the machine. By treading upon the forward end of the lever 19, the bar 14 can be elevated to throw the sockets 10 and 11 into a position to operate the shafts 4 and 5 in unison, these shafts bepivotally connected as at 26, to a reciproeating head mounted in the housing 2, this head and the elements just described being retained within the housing by a front plate 28a Fig. 2 mounted upon said housing and which is shown detached in Fig. 1 in order to more clearly illustrate the above described parts.
'Ihe reciprocating head comprises a block 27, a shell 28 surrounding said block, a cage 29 secured to said shell, and a guide plate 30 secured by bolts 31 and nuts 32 to said cage. rIhe block 27 carries a tace plate 27CL provided with a socket 33 for a threaded stem 34, to which is attached a punch 35 by a cup 36. The punch 35 extends through a guide sleeve 37, carried by the guide plate 30. Before the punch 35 can be removed, it is necessary that the sleeve 37, guide plate 39 and cup 36 be removed.
To relieve the eccentric straps 24 and 25 from the entire weight of the reciprocating head, I use a counter balance or weight 38 which is adjustably mounted upon an arm 39 fulcrumed in a bearing 40 carried by the side of the housing 2. lne arm 39 is pivotally connected, as at 41 to a pin 42 mounted in a stirrup 43, pivotally connected to the central eccentric strap 25. The pin 42 is ren tained within the stirrup 43 by a spring 44.
Reference will now be had to the base of the machine. vUpon the shaft 5 is mounted an eccentric 45 and surrounding said eccentric is a block 46, said block being housed in an opening 47 provided therefor in the lower reciprocating head 48. l'he eccentric 45 and the shaft 5 are partially released from the weight of the reciprocating head by a counter-balance or weight 49 adjustably mounted upon an arm 50, fulcrumed as at 51 in the base of the machine and connected to said lower head by a link 52. rIhe base of the machine is provided with openings 53 whereby easy access can be had to the weight 49.
The upper end ot the reciprocating head 48 is provided with a plurality of vertical openings 54, these openings being arranged transversely of the head 48 and to communicate with angularly disposed discharge openings 55, said discharge opening 55 communicating with openings 56 formed in opposite sides of the base of the machine.
The reciprocating head 48 adjacent to the outer ends otl each discharge opening is recessed, as at 57 to receive plates 58 carrying discharge chutes 59, said plates being secured by screw bolts 60. The discharge chutes 59 extend into the openings 56 when the head 48 is in either a raised or lowered position.
The upper end ot the reciprocating head 48 is provided with two inverted T shaped grooves 61 and adjustably connected to said head by bolts and nuts 62 is a table 63. Bolts 62 are adapted to slid-e in the groove 61 when the table is adjusted. The sides of the table 63 are provided with bearings 64 for an injector 65. Pivotally connected to the sides of the ejector as at 66 are levers 67, these levers being 'fastened to the base of the machine, as at 68. lI`he levers 67 are provided with turn-buckles 69 lor adjusting the throw or kick-ott' of the ejector 65.
Upon the table 63 is arranged an inclined platform 70, said platform being inelined towards an opening 71 'l'ormed in the lront plate 72 ot' the base o'l the machine. Protruding upwardly through the inclined platform is a hollow standard 73 having a die 74 adapted to extend upnuirdly into a die plate 75 provided therefor in the top plate 76 secured to the base oi" the machine. '1 he shafts 4 and 5 protrude "from the 'tron t ol the machine and are provided with apertured collars 77, whereby said shafts can be manually rotated when adjusting the various elements actuated by said shafts.
In Fig. 3 ot the drawings, I have illustrated the top plate 76 provided with a conventional shearing blade 78, while the cage 29 of the upper reciprocating head is provided with a depending shearing blade 79. These shearing blades are used i'or cutting sheet metal and are made oi" any desired size.
In Fig. 4 oi the drawings, I have illustrated attachments 'for my machine whereby various kinds of articles can be produced by cutting and pressing sheet metal into various shapes. The head 27 is provided with a shaping head 82 and the cage 29 is provided with a shearing blade 83. The bottom head 48 is provided with a shaping die 84and secured to the top plate 76 is a shearing blade 85. In the operation ot these shaping dies, the shaft 4 can be revolved il'roni lett to rieht thereby cutting the metal in shape before the pressing dies engage the saine.
Operation: My machine is controlled in operation by the lever 19 and the elutehesl t) and 11. Assuming that *ashers are to he produced by my machine, a sheet ot inetal from which the washers are cut and punched. is placed upon the die plate 75. hen the lower reciprocating head is elevated, the die 74 assists in supporting the sheet oi' metal while the upper reciprocating head descends and causes the punch 35 to provide the sheetof metal with an opening. A slight 'l'urther downward movement causes the guide sleeve to engage the sheet of metal, and then both of said reciprocating heads move downwardly a short distance together, causing the edges of the die plate 75 to shear the sheet ot metal and allow an annule t or washer to lay upon the dic 74 between the upper end of said die and the punch sleeve 37. Since this sleeve and the punch 35 is under the die plate 75, the uaper reciprocating head now raises and the lower reciprocating head descends a short distance to provide clearance between the upper end of' the die 7-1 and. the bottom of the top plate 76. The washer is now ready to be ejected 'from the machine through the opening 71 formed in the -l'ront plate 72. As the lower reciprocating head descends, the ejector 65 is elevated from the horizontal position shown in Fig. 21 to the vertical position shown in Figs. 6 and 7. This is accomplished by the levers 67 being pivotally connected to the stationary base of the machine and to the ejector 65. When the ejector passes-over the die 74, the washer thereon is kicked off on to the inclined platform 70 and is immediately discharged through the opening 71. The material or slug cut from the washer asses downwardly through the die 74, stan ard 73, into either of the openings 54 and 55 and eventually passes from the side of the machine. The movements of the reciprocating heads are entirely governed by the eccentrics 22, 23, and 45, and the operation of the machine is fully controlled by the lever 19. v ln shearing and stamping material, th
bell crank lever 13 is disconnected from the bar 14, as shown in Fig. 2, whereby the lower reciprocating head will remain stationary and permit of the upper reciprocating head being used for either shearing, punching or pressing.
My invention is susceptible to such structural changes as are permissible by the appended claims.
Having now described my invention what I claim as new, is.:-
l. A machine of the type described, comprising a structure having a base and an overhanging housing, a shaft journaled in said base, a shaft journaled in said housing, gear wheels for simultaneously operating said shafts, clutch members arranged upon said shafts for controlling the operation thereof, a tread lever for moving said clutch niembers, an upper reciprocating head arranged in said housing and actuated by the shaft thereof, a weighted arm for counterbalancing said reciprocating head, a cage carried by said head, a punch arranged in said cage and protruding therefrom, a reciprocating head arranged in said base and actuated by the shaft thereof, said head having discharge openings formed therein, said base having openings formed therein communicating with said discharge openings, a table arranged upon said reciprocating head, an ejector pivotally supported thereby, levers connecting said ejector with the base of said machine, an inclined platform carried by said table, a hollow standard carried by said table and eX- tending through said platform, a die arranged in said hollow standard, a die plate supported by said base for receiving said die and the punch of the upper reciprocating head, and means arranged 1n the base of saidl machine for counterbalancing said lower reciprocating head.

A machine of the type described, comprising astructure having a base and an overhanging housing, a shaft journaled in said base, a shaft journaled in said housing, gear wheels for simultaneously operating said shafts, clutch members arranged upon said shafts for controlling the operation thereof, a
tread lever for moving said clutch members,
an upper reciprocating head arranged in said housing and actuated by the shaft thereof, a weighted arm for counterbalancing said reciprocating head, a cage carried by said head,
a punch arranged in said cage and protruding form carried by said table,a hollow standard carried by said table and extending through said platform, a die arranged in said hollow standard, a die plate supported by said base for receiving said die and the punch of the upper reciprocating head.
8. A machine of the type described, comprising astructure having a base and an overhanging housing, shafts journaled in said structure, gear Wheels for simultaneously operating said shafts, clutch members for controlling the operation of said shafts, a tread lever for controlling the operation of said clutch members, reciprocating counterbalanced heads adapted to be operated by said shafts, one of said heads being located in said housing, and the other of said heads in said base, the reciprocating head of said base having discharge openings formed therein, a
platform carried by the head of said base, an
ejector pivotally supported by said head and connecting with the base of said structure, an inclined platform supported b v said table, a hollow standard extending upwardly through said platform, a die carried thereby, and a die plate supported by said base and adapted to receive said die.

A machine of the type described, comprising a structure having a base and an overhanging housing, shafts journaled in said structure, an upper reciprocating head actuated by one of said shafts, a lower reciprocating head actuated by the other of said shafts, said lower reciprocating head having discharge openings formed therein, an ejector carried by said head and adapted to be actuated by a lowering movement of said head, a die carried by said head, a die plate arranged upon said base and adapted to receive said die, means carried by the first mentioned reciprocating head for operating on work mounted on said base, means carried by said structure for counterbalancing said heads, and means arranged upon one side of said structure for controlling the operation of said shafts, substantially as described.

A machine of the type described, comprsing a structure having a base and an overhanging housing, sha'its journaled 1n sard structure, an upper reciprocating head actuated by one or said shafts, a lower reciproeating head actuated by the other o'lt said shafts, said lower reciprocating head having discharge openings 'formed therein, an ejector carried by said head and adapted to be actuated by a lowering movement oi said head, a die carried by said head, a die plate arranged upon said base and adapted to receive said die, means carried by the lirst mentioned reciprocating head for operating on work supported on said base, and means carried by said structure -tor counterbalancing said heads.

A machine oi the type described, comprising a structure having a base and an overhanging housing, sha'lts journaled in said structure, an upper reciprocating head actu ated by one o'i said sha'lfts, a lower reciprocating head actuated by the other oiE said shafts, said lower reciprocating head having discharge openings -formed therein, an ejector' carried by said head and adapted to be actuated by a lowering movement of said head, a die carried by said head, a die plate arranged upon said base and adapted to receive said dre, means carried by the first mentioned reciprocating head 'l'or operating on work mounted on said base.

A machine oi the type described, comprising a structure having a base and an overhanging housing, shafts journaled in said structure, reciprocating heads actuated by said shafts, a punch carried by one oi said heads, a die carried by the other oll said heads, an ejector carried by said die-carrying head and actuated by a downward movement there-rolf, means for dischz'irging the material operated upon by said punch and die, means 'for counterbalaneiug said heads, and means i`or controlling the operation oi said sha'lts.

A machine olI the type described, com-4 prising a structure having a base and an overhanging housing, shafts journaled in said structure, reciprocating heads actuaied by said shailts, a punch carried by one oll said heads, adie carried bythe other or said h aids, an ejector carried by said die-carrying head and actuated by a downward movement thereof, means lor discharging the material operated upon by said punch and die, and means for eounterbalancing said heads.
