OLIVER- F. MO'MANY, OFDOWAGIAC, MICHIGAN.
Letters Patent No. 90,7 70, dated` Jzme 1, 1,869.-
-IMIPROVEMENT IN ROLLER GRAIN-DRILL.
'The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, OLIVER F. MoMANY, ot Dowagiac, in -the county of Oass, and State of Michigan, have invented a new and improved Roller Grain-Drill; and I do .hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof', reference being had to the annexed drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure 1 is a side view;
Figure 2 is a rear view of the coverers;
Figure 3 is a longitudinal view through thediameter oi' `the grain-har, showing the pockets; and
Figure 4 shows the arrangements of the slides for shutting oil the grain. ,i i,
rlhe nature of in y invention consists in arranging a more simple and convenient machine forsowiug grain in drills.
To enable' othersskilld in the arts to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
A is the main frame, embracing the wheels B, and forming, in part,- the hopper C.
.lhese wheels are formed with V-shapcd peripheries, for forming the drills, and are made with or without spokes.
Ihc two outside wheels, 1 l, support the frame A. The interveningr wheels, of which there may be any number desired, are hung in separate sliding' frames,
d, and are free to work up and down in the gains'or grooves 2, in the partition-pieces D of the frame A,
so as to conform to the uneven portions ofthe ground,
and may be provided with springs, in order .to compeleach wheel to support a portion of the weight of the frame A.
One of the outside 'wheels 1 is provided with the cam and oscillating lever, for the purpose of working the feed-bar V3, containing the adjustable measuring;
The top of bar 3 is covered with a movable slide, f, and is cut out over the pockets, and the lipG is bent down into the pockets, by which 'the pockets are diminished or extended as the slide fismovcd. v
The setscrew H is to hold said slide, Awhen in'lthe desired positiomto make the pockets large yorsmall, thus governing the amount of grain sown without changing the motion of the feed-bar' 3.
The stationary bari, forms the bottoni of the pockets E when-4 they are. in position to fill withgrain from the hopper C, but has openings, at k, over which the pockets slide, and discharge their contents into the drill.
A similar bar, L, forms the bottom of the hopper O, with openings m, through which' the grain passes to any suitable manner, to allow it to move endwise,v
having long slots, through which the levers N project, and is actuated by the handle o', for the purpose oi opening or closing all of the pockets at once; or a single .pocket may be closed or opened by moving one oi' the levers N, the slot q' being long enough to allow of such movement without disturbingthe other levers. Thus one or more oi the pockets can be closed iu case a strip of land narrower than the whole width of the machine is to be sown.
S are rolling covercrs, formed of bevel-faced wheels, set in paiis,w ith a wheel upon each side ofthe drillfurrow, with their bevelled faces inward, so as to press the dirt displaced by the V-shaped wheels B back into the drill, thus covering the grain in the most effectual manner.
The pedestals 'I are so arranged as to iet the coverers S work independent of' cach other.
X forms the drivel-s seat and connection by which the covering-arrangement is attached -to the rear of the frame A, and should be of such length -as will cause the covering-wheels S to follow the drills when the machine is moving on a circle.
W is a lever, for the purpose of raising and lowerof slides f and O, the-hars i and 3, levers N, and' handle lr, and the arrangement of the coverers S, iu combination with the pesdestals T T, drivers seat X, all as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claimthe foregoing, I havehereunto set my hand, this 1st day of October, in the year 1868.
