Be it'kno wn that I, THOMhB W. Written, of Milledgevill'e, in the county of Baldwin, and State of Georgia, have invented a new and improved combined Seed andGuano-Planter; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, and in whiehi Figure 1 is a longitudinal elevation of my invention.

This invention has for its object the construction of an instrument which may be used either as a common plough, or for sowing guano or planting cotton-seed, corn, peas, &c., andavhich shall he'light, simple, cheap, and durable. i
. p In the drawings A. A represent theside-bea'm s of a'common scooter plough, of whichB is the share, W the drew-beam, and 0 Care the handles. D is a wheel-or rpller'firmly fired upon and turning with the shaft d which bears in the side-beams A A, and situated at a point onthe' shaft 'a little to the left of its centre. G is a short cylinder or drum firmly fixed to the same shaft adjoining'the wheel D, and to theright of it and at the centre of the shaft. Firmly attached to the right-hand face of this drum is a circular saw, H, a little larger in diameter than the drum G. On the right-hand side of the wheel D, and surrounding the upper partof the drum G, is a high, vertical semicircular plate,- E,- of wood or metal, as may be found best adapted to thc'purpose, fixed firmly to the right side-beam by bent flangs'or ears w w. This plate. covers all the right face of the wheel D, except that portion of it which the drum G- pres ses against and covers, asemicircular section being removed for that purpose. The drum Grand saw H are enclosed in a rectangular box,- ot which the wheel'D and plate E form the left side, the short beam F and the flange w'the front end, the beam I, similar in'size to the-beam F and flange w, the rear end, and the right side is formed bylthe hinged block K attached by hinges on its left edge to the right beams A of the plough, or mit'de to turn on pinspp passing through the flanges w w. The bottom of this box is formed by a rectangular piece of wood or metal, N, held in place hyset-screws u a passing through the right plough-beam'A', and attached at their extremities to perpendicular ears 1: at of the bottom piece N. The bottom pieceN is thus rendered adjustable, and may be advanced towards the drum Gorwithdrawn from it by screwing or unscrewing the set'screws u u. L is acam on the right extremity of the shaft 01, which, as the shaft revolves, strikes the blockK and raises-it,allowingit to drop again by the force of gravity, thuscoristantly agitating the contents of the'feed-box and insuring their distribution. Ms a bag fastened tightly to the vertical plate E, the block K, and the ears w w', and stop being held up hy strings,- m vm, attached to the plough-handles C G. This bag forms the seed-box of the instrument, from which guano or cotton-seed are sown through the space between the blo'ck-K and the disk of the saw H, when the instrument is used forsowing eitherof those materials. v v
, The means of planting corn, peas, turnip-seed, &c., are different from those of serving guano or cotton-seed abovedescribed. To plant corn, peas, at, I have little beds, :s y 2, some e'daptedto'hold aikernel of corn, some to hold apea, some to holds turnipseed, 86s., cut: in the periphery of the cylinder or drum G, the drum thus constructed operating the same-as the usual feeding roller in the seed-bolt of corn-planters. Iadapt the drum to planting the required-seedby the simplelexpedieut of 'havingit surrounded bye tightbandof metal, or anyother suitable substance, in which; at distances net corresponding with these hetween'th'e seed-beds-in the periphcry of the drum, make perforations in size and maps corresponding re the size and shape of the difierent varieties of seed. To plant corn, turn this belt round on the drum till aperture in it corresponding to need of corn shall stand over the'similar bed in the surface of the drum; and so for planting turnip-seed, peas,beans, or any other seed. v
The quantity of guanoor cottonseed which is te be fed fromthe seed-hex in' a given time is regulated by the set-screws at in the wheei D, and the set scr-ews an in the piough beam A, adjusting the movable bottom N. The set-screws t t in the wheel D pass through the wheel'and enter the interior of the drum G, where they are attached to a movable circular disk; T, which, by being screwed in or out, the; move to the right'oi' left in the drum Gr. This disk has a circular central aperture, through which the shaft d passes. The disk T, sitting loosely on the shaft, is thus supported by it and allowed to slide tothe right or left upon it. The right surface of the disk is armed with-projecting teeth, t t t t, passing throughcorresponding apertures, 22 t t" t, in the right end of the drum G, and projecting a. shortdistance beyond the surface of the drum. By advancing or withdrawing the disk T, by means of the sot-screws t t, as before explained, these teeth, t t t t, may be made to project some distance froin the end of the drum G, or they maybe entirely withdrawn, so as not to project from the drum at all. By this means the distribution of the guano or cotton-seed is regulated, the quantity fed beingincreased. or diminished in proportion as the teeth t" t are caused to project to a greater or less distance from the end of the revolving drum, and in proportion as the rectangular bottom plate N is moved to the right or left Of course when the teeth t t are caused to project, the bottom plate u must bewithdru wn to a corresponding extent, otherwise the teeth might come in contact with it. i
' The semicircular vertical plate E' serves the double purpose of protecting th-ebng from wearing against the wheel D, and of furnishing a bearing, by means of its flanges, w'w', for the pins pp upoh which the block K turns. satv H, revolving insidc cf this seed-box, outs and removes any obstructions; such as sticks, &c.,
that may-happen to get into th'e'box. The covering shovels of the planter are shown at R R. I use the common shovel attached to the plough by arms hinged to the standard or share B.
Having thus explained the construction and operation of my improved plough and planter, whatlclaim as new, and'desire to secure by Letters Patent, is.
1. The drum G, having the internal movable disk T, bearing the teeth t t, and adjusted by set-screws, or their equivalents, substantially as and for the purpose described. I
2. The saw H attached to the drum G, substantially as and for the purpose described.
, 3. The bottom plate N, substantially as described.
