CALIPERS.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 22, 1908.
Application led November 29, 1907. Serial No. 404,197.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HOMER J REPP, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Topeka, in the county of Shawnee and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Calipers, of which the following is a specication.
My invention relates to tools and refers particularly to that class of measuring instruments termed calipers.
The chief objects of my improvements are to provide a caliper-compass with an indicating scale for registering the measurements taken with the instrument; to furnish a convenient mechanism for opening and closing the jaws to supply a tool of neat appearance and presenting a smooth outline and to supply a protective covering for the working parts, thus tting the instrument for pocket use.
,l Further objects of my invention are to furnish a compensating device for the lost motion caused by wear, to furnish means for locking the jaws when adjusted, and to produce a simple, durable and accurate appliance for the purposes to which such tools are applicable.
accomplish the objects sought by means of the instrument illustrated in the accompanying drawing which forms a part of this application, and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the complete instrument furnished with jaws adapted for outside work; Fig. 2 is an edge view of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1, with one of the housing plates removed, some parts being in section; Fig. 4 is a side view of a jaw adapted for inside measurements and provided with a modification designed to compensate for wear; Fig. 5 is'an enlarged view showing the washer a plied to the stem of the operating screw, the atter being in section, and Fig. 6 is an edge view of the housing plates removed from the tool.
Referring more in detail to the drawing, the numeral 10 indicates the head of an operating screw, provided with' a milled surface 11. Formed integral with the head is a cone shaped collar 12 which en ages the end of a housing composed of dup icate plates each late consisting of semi-tubular parts 13, 13 a, aving laterally extending wings 16, triangular in outline. One end of the housing plates have flanges 14 which are notched to receive the body of the said operating screw, their margin being in apposition, thus forming a bearing for the end of the screw farthest from the head. The opposite ends of the housing plates are furnished with semi-cone-shaped anges 15 which have a smaller radius of curvature than the semi-tubular portions of the plates, thus producing shoulders 15a. rlhe ianges 15 are in apposition when the parts are assembled forming a complete coneshaped collar which is covered by the collar 12 as by a cap the free margin of the said collar 12 engaging the shoulders 15a. The combined lianges 15 thus form a conical bearing upon which the screw turns when operated by the milled head 10. The body of said operating screw is furnished with threads 17 and the point 18 of the screw is reduced in size and threaded, and has upon one side a spline or key-way 19, in which is received a lug or key 20 formed in a washer 21, said Washer being held against the flanged portion 14 of the tubular part of the housing by means of a set nut 22.
Caliper jaws 23 of the usual form are received between the housing plates and are pivoted to the triangular Wings 16 by rivets or pivot screws 24. The ends of the jaws thus secured to the housing are curved along the margin in apposition with the screw 17 said'curve having the pivot 24 for a center, and are furnished with teeth 25 adapted to be engagedby said operating screw. By this arrangement the position of the jaws will be governed by turning the screw which may be properly termed a worm, and the toothed jaw ends meshing therewith segment wormgears.
In Fig. 4 is shown a modified form of jaw 26 having a hole at 27 for a pivot and adapted for inside measurements. In this form the worm-gear teeth 25EL are formed in a separate piece 28, pivoted to the main part of the jaw at 28a. A flat spring 29 is inserted in notches in the two parts of the aw and serves to take up the wear in the teeth.
The outer surface of the conical collar 12 is furnished with graduations 12a and upon one side of the tubular casing is placed an index mark 30 by means of which the angular movement of the screw and the corresponding interval between the working faces of the free ends of the jaws may be determined. The graduations may be calibrated to register inches or any other scale desired.
The structure and arrangement of the parts thus shown and described produce a compact and efcient tool, the operating worm constitutes a micrometer screw by the manipulation of which iine adjustments may be made, and the method of rictionally holding the parts in adjusted position by the set nut all combining to furnish a device of great utility.
What l claim as new, is t 1. rlhe combination with a two-part tubular casing, jaws pivoted between said parts, segment gears on said jaws, and housed in said casing, and a screw mounted in said housing and meshing with said gears, of a conical collar on said screw and engaging said housing, said collar having graduations thereon and said housing having an indicating mark thereon, and means for locking said screw against rotation.
2. The combination of a housing compassjaws pivoted to said housing, segment gears attached to. said jaws, a worm screw journaled insaid housing and meshing with said gears, compensating means for lost motion in the gears, means for registering the angle of rotation of said screw from the initial point, and means for securing the parts in adjusted position.
3. The combination with a tubular housing, a conical flange attached to the housing, jaws pivoted to the housing, segment gears for the jaws, and a worm screw journaled in said housing, and meshing with said gears, of a conical collar attached to said screw and engaging the said conical flange, said collar provided with graduations.
In testimony whereof l affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
HOMER J. REPP.
