To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRANKLrN THOMPSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Pencil, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

This invention relates to pencils and has for its object the production of a pencil adapted for holding and firmly clamping leads 0f various kinds such as are used in ordinary writing pencils and also slate and carpenters pencils, chalk, crayon and the like, the construction involved enabling soft as well as hard leads to be held securely on account of the same being clamped at more than a single point.

With the above and other objects in view, the nature of which will more fully 'appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts herein fully set forth, illustrated and claimed.

In the accompanyin drawings Figure l is aside elevation o a pencil embodying the present invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a cross section through the lead clamping jaws.

The pencil of this invention is of the ordinary general shape, but in carrying out the invention the pencil is divided into three sections, 1 designating the main section or body of the pencil, 2 the end cap thereof, and 3 the intermediate section or clamp by which the lead is held, 4 designating the lead which may consist of lead, graphite composition, carbon, slate, chalk, or any other material used for writing or marking purposes. 1, 2 and 3 have the same outside diameter, by preference, while the intermediate section or clamping member is shorter than the other two sections, that is as far as outward appearance is concerned, as shown in Fig. l. The intermediate section 3 is however provided with oppositely projecting tapering and threaded extensions, as shown in Fig. 2, which are split or divided lengthwise, forming threaded

5 and 6 between which the lead is clamped as indicated in Fig. 2, the section 3 being provided with a longitudinal bore from end to end through which the lead passes.

The main section or body l has the open end thereof internally tapered and threaded as shown to receive the taper jaws 5, so that in screwing the section 3 into the section 1 the jaws 5 are pressed toward each other, thereby clamping the lead at that point. In like manner the cap or end section 2 is internally tapered and threaded as shown to receive the taper jaws 6, and when screwed upon said jaws, it acts to press said jaws toward each other thereby clamping the lead at another point. Thus the lead is clamped at a plurality of points, thereby giving a more reliable hold on the lead and also holding the lead steady, which prevents the wabbling of the lead and the consequent liability of breaking the same.

The extremity of the jaws 6 is pointed as shown at 7 and the corresponding extremity of the section 2 is also pointed to agree therewith, thus giving to the pencil as a `whole the appearance of the ordinary pointed lead pencil now in common use. By slightly loosening the sections 2 and 3, the lead 4 may be advanced to suit and again firmly clamped by tightening said sections.

I claim 1. A pencil of sectional construction comprising an intermediate section adapted to receive the lead embodying two sets of taper jaws extending in opposite directions, and other sections at opposite ends of the intermediate section having a taper fit upon the said sets of jaws, whereby the lead is clamped at a plurality of points, substantially as described.

2. A sectional pencil comprising an intermediate section adapted to receive the lead embodying oppositely projecting sets of threaded taper jaws, and other sections internally tapered and threaded for engagement with said jaws, whereby the lead is clamped at a plurality of points in the length thereof, substantially as described.
