To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, 'Inoinis R. MURRAY, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Pittsburg, in thecounty of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fountain-Brushes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

This invention relates to a fountain scrub brush, and the objects of my invention are, first, to obviate the necessity of carrying a bucket of water to the place to be scrubbed and of dipping a brush into water; second, to provide a fountain brush in which water will be equally distributed; third, to provide a fountain scrub brush with a nozzle and hose attachment, and fourth, to provide a brush that can be advantageously used for cleaning large surfaces.

I attain the above objects by providing a brush with a hollow and perforated bristlesupporting-body to which is attached a hollow handle having a novel valve adapted to be connected by a hose to a suitable water supply.

'Ihe detail construction entering into my invention will be presently described and then specifically pointed out in the appended claims.

Referring to the drawing forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my brush, Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the body of a brush, Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view of the same, Fig. l is a horizontal sectional view of a valve used in connection with the brush, Fig. 5 is a longitudinal sectional view of a modified form of brush, Fig. 6 is an end view of the same, and Fig. 7 is a longitudinal sectional view of a valve used in connection with my brush.

To put my invention into practice, I provide a bristle supporting plate l with a plurality of vertical openings Q, said openings being drilled or bored between some of the bristles 3 to insure an equal distribution of water upon the bristles.

Secured to the plate 1 by screws ll or similar fastening means is a plate 5 having a longitudinal semi cylindrical enlargement G, which is provided intermediate its end with a nipple or socket 7, for a tubular or hollow handle S.

lVithin the enlargement 6 is arranged a water deflector, said deflector comprising a horizontal plate 9 secured to the enlargement (5 by stra-ps 10 and screws 11, or similar fastening means. rlhe water deflector is arranged centrally of the enlargement G and iu close proximity to the end of the tubular handle S mounted in the hnippleor socket 7.

rlhe free end of the tubular or hollow handle S is provided with a two-way valve 12 having a nipple 13 adapted to be connected to a hose 11i which connects with a suitable supply of water. The valve 12 is provided with a threaded socket 15 for the end of the tubular handle S and with another nipple 1G for a piece of hose 17, said piece of hose having a nozzle 1S, and a clasp 19 for detachably holding the piece of hose 17 in engagement with the handle S, when the hose is not being used. A valve plug 20 controls the passage of water into either the handle S or the hose 17, and one position of the plug 20 entirely shuts oftl the supply of water to the handle S and the hose 17. The valve 12 is of a conventional form, and I would have it understood that I do not care to confine myself to the type of valve shown.

To facilitate the manipulation of the scrubbing brush, I provide the handle S with a hand grip S adapted to protect one hand, while the brush is being used, and a movable sleeve 2l adapted to protect the other hand when the handle 8 is moved back and forth, such being the common movement imparted to a brush when scrubbing. To maintain the sleeve 21 in a convenient position upon the handle 8, said handle is provided with a fixed collar 21a.

In Figs. 5 and G of the drawings, I have illustrated a modification of my invent-ion, wherein the end of the handle S is provided with a coupling collar 22 for a cylindrical tapering brush body -3, said brush body having a bore 24 communicating with the tubular handle S. The brush body 23 is provided with bristles Q5 and with a plurality of cireumfercntially arranged angularly disposed ports QG, these ports being designed to project water towards the forward end of the body 23. The forward or large end ofI the body is closed by a cap 27.

When the preferred form of brush illustrated in Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive is used, it is not necessary to remain on the hands or knees while scrubbing, or is it necessary to carry water to rinse a surface after being scrubbed, as the water can be deflected from the tubular handle 8 into the hose 17, and

projected with considerable force upon the scrubbed surface, according to the type of nozzle used. The deflector Within the enlargement 6 prevents the Water entering said enlargement from passing directly through the openings 2 adjacent to the nipple 7, and by the use of said deflector, I obtain a quick distribution of Water upon the bristles 3.

I desire it to be understood that the valve l2 and its connections can be used With the brush body 23 and that the sleeve 2l can be dispensed With.

IVhile in the drawings forming a part of this application there is illustrated a preferable forni of construction embodying the invention, it is to be understood that the elements therein inay be varied or changed as to the shape, proportion, and exact inan- -ner of assemblage Without departing from the spirit of the invention.

l. A scrubbing brush embodying a bristle supporting plate, said plate having a jlufality of openings formed therein, a plate secured to the first mentioned plate and having a longitudinal semi-cylindrical enlargement provided with a nipple, a deflector mounted in said enlargement adjacent to said nipple, a tubular handle mounted in said nipple, and a valve carried by the end of said tubular handle and adapted to be connected With a suitable Water supply.
