CAN-OPENER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OSCAR E. BRAGQNIER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rockford, in the county of Winnebago and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gan-Openers, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to construct a can opener in which the can is held from rotation while the top is being cut.

A head 1 is provided with a plurality of prongs 2. A shank 3 has a fixed connection with this head and to its end is fixedly connected a cross-bar 4:. A lever 5 supports a knife 6 which is adjustably connected thereto by the thumb screw 7. The shank portion 8 of this knife projects above the upper face of the lever 5 for a purpose to appear hereinafter. This lever 5 is provided with a slot 9 extending in the lengthwise direction thereof. The shank 3 is located in this slot.
Over the lever 5 and around the shank 3 is located an adjusting plate 10 from which extends a plate 11 provided with a plurality of side notches l2, and from the plate 11 near its free end extends a thumb hold 13. A pin 14 is passed through the shank 3 and a spring 15 surrounds the shank 3 and is located between the adjusting plate 10 and the pin 14:. The action of this spring is to hold the adjusting plate 10 and lever 5 in frictional contact with the head 1.
In use the prongs 2 of the head are forced into the head of a can, and the cross-bar held by one hand which will hold the can from turning. At the time the prongs are forced into the head of the can, the knife 6 is also forced through the head of the can. By turning the lever in the direction indicated by the arrow 16, the knife will scribe a circle and sever the head from the can.
In order to make the opener applicable to cans of varying diameters, the head 1 is Specification of Letters Patent.

This is accomplished by moving the plate 10 free of the shank 8 of the knife, and then moving it in the direction of its length until another of the side notches embraces the shank of the knife. This movement of the plate will move the shank 3 in the slot 9 of the plate. When the lever 5 is rotated in the direction indicated by the arrow 16, the shank 8 of the knife being seated in one of the side notches 12 will turn the adjustingplate 10 with it. By this arrangement of can opener, the can is held against rotation by the prongs 2 in the head 1, while the end of the can is being cut out.
I claim as my invention.
1.- A can opener comprising ahead portion provided with a plurality of prongs, a
shank extending from the head, a lever formed with a slot through which the shank extends, a knife supported by the lever, an adjusting plate located overthe lever and with which it has an adjustable connection, the adjusting plate having a swivel connection with the shank of the head, and a spring holding the adjusting plate against the lever, and the lever against the head.
2. A can opener comprising a head portion provided with a plurality of prongs, a shank extending from the head, a lever formed with a slot through which the shank extends, a knife supported by the lever, an adjusting plate located over the lever and with which it has an adjustable connection through the medium of a plurality of edge notches which receive a pin extending from the lever, the adjusting plate having a swivel connection with the shank of the head, and a spring holding the adjusting plate against the lever, and the lever against the head.
