Description

H. D. CHANCE.
Burglar-Alarm.
Patented june 1,1869.
715525: asses tuiterl Ctatrt @sind Qtjirr.
Letters Patent No. 90,636, dated Juize 1, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN BURG-LAR-ALARM.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, H. D. CHANCE, of Allentown,
iu the county of Lehigh, and State of Pennsylvania,
have invented a new and improved Burglar-Alarm; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this spcciiication.
The nature of this invention consists in the `appli- `ence to the door, Ste., that by opening the latter, the
cartridges or caps will be discharged, and the inmates arousedor the watehmans attention called to the spot.
In the drawings- Figure l is a perspective view of the application of my invention to a common door.
Figure 2, perspective view, showing the arrangement of the apparatus within the jamb.
Figure 3, perspective enlarged view of hammer-head and block F.
A is a chamber or mortise formed in the door-jamb, from the inside, of a suitable form, in which may be inserted a metallic box or lining, A. f
B is a spring-discharging hammer, pivoted to `turn from side to side within a slot, or to a block at the rear of the chamber A.
This spring consists of a thin piece or tongue of' suitable material, extending lengthwise o'f the chamber A to the open end, and is provided with a double head, one side of which being extended, forms a tooth to workin the teeth of the charged rack O.
AThe remaining part is formed into a hammer-'head to discharge the cartridges or caps. v
C is a slide, to be placed in the chamber A, as shown, on one side of which is a row of large teeth, Cl, which raise the spring B, when the slide is drawn out, and cause the same to drop behind each tooth.
The even surface of the slide beside the row of teeth is provided with a series of vertical holes, or other suitable means of holding the cartridges or caps G2, one of which is placed at the end of each tooth, so that when the hammer-head drops, it strikes the caps and discharges them. i
D is a metallic plate, pivoted to the end of the slide, l
so as to cover the end of the chamber A.
E is a button or arm, pivoted in like manner to the end of the slide C, and is made to rest against the door when the alarm is set, as shown in iig. 1.
F is a small oblong block, pivoted to the side of the i chamber A, to keep the spring-hammer adjusted to the slide C.
The manner of charging and setting the alarm is as follows:
The slide being drawn out, is capped; the small block F is turned up and the spring B moved over to one side, which allows the slide to be inserted. The. plate D is then 'turned to one side, the spring B adjusted to its proper `position on the slide, the small block F turned down, and the plate returned to its former position, so as to cover the open end of the chamberA. 'lhe button E is then turned toward the closed door, and the alarm is ready for action.
The door being opened, presses against the button E, draws out the slide, and causes the alarm.
When the door is quickly or suddenly opened, all the charges arc tired in rapid succession, and the slide thrown out on the floor.
rlhe entire apparatus should be made of metal.
Its eiciency as a burglar-alarm can be seen at a glance. It is simple, cheap, and durable. Encascd in a suitable chamber or box in the jamb, it will remain, when not set, charged for years.
It wiil fire one or several charges and sound sufiicient alarm to draw immediate attention, and is not dangerous to children, should it be tampered with.
lt takes up little room, and may be painted. over, the same as the jarnh, so as to be scarcely perceptible.
By slightly changing the form ofthe button on the end of the charged rack, it may be applied to a window-shutter, gate, 850.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The charged rack C, button E, and spring-hammer B, all constructed, arranged, and operating as specilied and shown.
2. In combination with the above, the plate D and block F, as and for the purpose set forth.
W'itnesses: H. D. CHANGE.
WILLM. PARTRLDGE, CORNELIUS COLEMAN.
