To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM S. A NOLD, citizen of the United States, residing at Le rain,in the county of Lorain and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trolley-l/Vire Hangers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in trolley wire hangers or supports.
One of the objects of my invention is the provision of a hanger which is inexpensive to manufacture, and which will support the trolley wire in an effective manner, and at the same time permit the latter to have free movement relative to the spanner or sup porting wire both laterally and in a vertical plane so that the passage of the trolley along the wire will not cause the trolley wire to be worn or broken at the ends of the clamping portion of the hanger.
A further object is to provide a construction such that the use of cast metal parts can be entirely done away with.
The hanger constructed in accordance with my invention is composed principally of two parts, a supporting member which engages the spanner wire and a trolley wire clamping member which is freely supported from the supporting member, the construction of said parts being such that each can be formed from a single piece of sheet metal.
The supporting member which engages the spanner wire is provided at the top with spaced oppositely bent hooks which receive the spanner wire and which are out of alinemcnt so that the said wire is slightly bent or kinked and cannot work out of place, and with a socket or sleeve portion which receives firmly an insulated bolt or rod which supports the trolley wire clamping member. The other member which engages the trolley wire is preferably formed by doubling a plate upon itself, the trolley wire being clamped between the free ends of the plate by bolts passing through the latter and is provided at the top with an opening through which the lower end of the bolt carried by the supporting member passes freely, the
clamping member being retained on the bolt by some means such as a nut on the end of the bolt.
My invention may be further briefly summarized as consisting in certain novel details of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts which will be described inthe specification and set forth in the appended claims.
Reference is now had to the figures of the drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a hanger constructed in accordance with my invention showing a portion of a trolley wire and also meets the requirements very effectively, and
in said embodiment 1 represents as a whole the supporting member or the part which engages-the spanner or supporting wire, and- 9. the clamping member or the part which engages the trolley wire. The member 1 is formed in this case from asingle sheet of metal and is provided at the top with a pair of oppositely extending arms 3 and 4 having at the ends hooks 5 and-6 bent in the same direction, and at the center midway between the hooks 5 and 6 is a hook 7 out of line with the hooks 5.and 6 and bent in an opposite Y direction. These hooks receive the spanner or supporting wire 8 which is bent or slightly kinked and is therefore in no danger of working out of place.
-Below the hooks is a hollow socket or sleeve like portion 9 formed by bending two win-gs 10 and 11' toward each otherso as to form a hollowcylincler. This socket portion receives with a tight fit an-insulator 12 in the form of a spool which may be formed in any desired manner, but in the present case is formed of anumber of disks or washers of insulating material. Passing through the center of the insulating spool. is a member which supports the trolley wire clamping member 2,-and in the present instance this member is in the form of a bolt 13 provided at its upper end with a nut 13 which is clamped down on the upper disk of the spool 12 and having its lower end projecting below the spool. The member 2 is formed from a single piece of sheet metaldoubledunon itself and being. substantially U -shaped, having two side portions 14 and 15 and a top portion 16. This member 2 is supported on the bolt 13 which passes-loosely through a centrally located opening in the top portion 16 and is provided on the under side of the portion 16 with a retaining member which is, inthis case, a nut 17 engaging the threaded c .d of the bolt. The lower edges of the side. portions of the member 2 are beveled and said portions are slightly rounded outward near the edges as shown at 1.8 and 19. These rounded portions receive the trolley wire 20 and are clamped firmly about the same by clamping bolts 21 which extend between the sides of the member 2, the latter being slightly bulged or curved outward at this point. The clamping member is preferably made from material having considerable spring or elasticity so that there will always be sufiicient pressure on the nuts 22 of the bolts 21 to prevent the nuts turning, and at the same time the trolley wire will be held firmly in place. The edges oi the nut 17 are slightly rounded and the size of the nut and bolt are such as to permit the clamping member 2 to have a rocking movement both laterally and in a vertical plane so that'there is little danger of the trolley wire being broken or worn at the corners of the clamping.portion of the side plates when the trolley of a car passes along the wire. The nut is of course suiliciently large to prevent its working oli' the bolt.
I do not desire to be confined to the exact details shown but aim in my claims to coverall modifications, which do not involve a departure from the spirit and scope of my top by said socket portion, and a trolley wire clamping member mounted upon the lower end of the bolt. 7
2. In a trolley wire hanger, a supporting member formed of a single piece of sheet metal, said member having a portion bent in the'form of a sleeve or socket and having oppositely extending arms or wings having hooks bent in one direction and having intermediate said hooks and out of alinement therewith a hook bent in the opposite direction, said hooks being adapted to receive a supporting wire, an insulated bolt carried by said sleeve or socket portion and a trolley wire clamping member carried by the lower end of said bolt.
In a trolley wire hanger, a supporting member adapted to be connected to a spanner or supporting wire, an insulated supporting bolt carried by said member, a trolley wire clan'iping member consisting of a piece of metal doubled upon itself forming side portions adapted toreceive a trolleywire and means for clamping said side portions about the trolley wire consisting of bolts passing through the former, said supporting bolt passing through the top of said clamping member and having retaining means at the lower end thereof and on the interior of the clamping member.
