Description
W. H. LEWIS.
TOWING ROLLER. APPLICATION FILED JUNE 4, 1902.
Patented Dec. 8, 1908.
50.. IISHIIOTGN- Q UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM H. LEWIS, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
TOWING-ROLLER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 8, 1908,
Application filed June 4, 1908. Serial No. 436,605.
over which a towing hawser may be hauled in.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide such rollers that the hawser may be eaisily pulled in without unduly wearing the ro ler.
Another object is to so construct the rollers that the hawser will not jam.
Other objects will appear from the hereinafter description.
Referring to the drawings in which the same reference character re resents the same part in the several views: igure 1 is a side elevation of my device. Fig. 2 is an end elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a diagram showing a taffrail or other part of a boat in which the apparatus shown in Figs. 1 and 2 is shipped.
The part marked A on the drawing represents two uprights or standards which may be of the shape shown in the drawing or any other desired form. The lower parts of these standards are formed or provided with rods or bars a which fit into the openings 1) of the taifrail B when the device is in use. The upper ends of the standards are provided with shafts a on which are mounted the two upright guide rollers C.
Between the two standards A, A, is a large roller D mounted on a shaft E, the ends of which are reduced at e to fit in circular 0 enings or bearings in the standards A. aoh end of the shaft E is provided with a nut e by which the shaft is secured to the standards. The roller D is cut away or reduced at d. By this construction the circumference of the roller D projects above the lower end of the vertical roller C and the meeting faces of all the rollers fit snugly so that the hawser cannot become jammed between the rollers.
The hawser F rides freely over the top of the roller D during the operation of pulling in the hawser, and as it moves from side to side on said roller it takes up against and is guided by one-of the vertical rollers C. When the device is not in use it can be unshipped from the taifrail and laid on the deck.
In prior constructions, so far as I am aware, the rollers D very quickly wear down,
the parts get out of alinement and the hawser becomes jammed, and the device has to be.
frequently renewed. In my construction these objections are removed. The rollers as arranged guide the hawser freely and prevent jamming, and the life of the-apparatus is greatly increased.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent is:
1. In a device of the class described, a pair of standards, a shaft connecting the same, a roller on said shaft having the ends thereof reduced, and a air of vertical rollers having their lower on s projecting in and fitting snugly in the reduced end of the first mentioned roller.
2. In a device of the class described, standards having one end thereof fitted with a rod and shaft having the ends thereof reduced and fitting in bearings in said standards, a roller mounted on said shaft, each end of said roller being reduced in diameter, a 1 shaft on each standard, and a roller mounted on each of said shafts, one end of each of said rollers fitting in the reduced end of said first mentioned roller.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand at New York, county of New York and State of New York,
this eighteenth day of May, 1908.
In presence of I. RICHARDS,
WILLIAM H. LEWIS.
