TRANSOM-LIFT.
specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 8, 1908.
Application filed March 12, 1908. Serial No. 420,731.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FLORENCE B. LA BELLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Salt Lake City, in the county of Salt Lake and State of Utah, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Transom-Lifts, of which thefollowing is a specification. v
The purpose of my invention is to provide a transom lift, that will move the transom with but little effort on the part of the operator, and one that the transom will remain in the position as left by the operator, and that will handle the heaviest an largest transom, as well as the lightest and smallest, and that is adapted to any shaped transom, whether rectangular, oval, circular or otherwise, and
when the transom is closed will be locked with a positive bar lock so that it cannot be opened from the outside by any force short of breaking the parts. I attain these ob jects by the device shown inthe accompanying drawings, in which similar letters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views.
Figure 1, is a front elevation with a transom partially open. Fig. 2, is a plan of the lifting rod and lugged sleeve. Fig. 3, is an elevation of same. Fig. 4, is an end elevation of the same. Fig. 5, is a section plan of the lugged sleeve on line w, m, Fig. 4. Fig. 6, is an end elevation of the device with a transom partially open. Fig. 7, is an end, side, and front elevation, of the L shaped rod. Fig. 8, is an enlarged detailed elevation of the lifting rod and one pulley. Fig. 9, is an enlarged side elevation of one of the pulleys.
The device may be attached b any suitable means to the house, prefera ly screws, the length of the transom determining the length of the slotted bar F; the pur ose being to make it approximately onealf the length of the transom.
Just above the transom on the inside casing A, is attached the lift, that consists of an L shaped rod, L, one end securely fastened to the transom B, on a connection to the other arm of which is provided a lock opening C; the urpose of which will. be more fully set out ereinafter, and the upper end of-which arm being formed to enter or engage by any suitable means, one end of a lifting rod D, the other end of which last-named rod is bent at an angle and swiveled in an internally lugged sleeve E, that is carried by the laterally and rotatably movable rod F, and whose lug engages the spirally disposed slot in said rod F. The rod F is mounted in suitable bearin s G, and carries near one end, a pulley H, an a coiled spring I, that is kept in ten sion and held on said rod F by the cap nut J. The said rod F is journaled in the said bearings G to permit a limited lateral movement, as well as a free rotary motion when the rod F, by means of the pulley H, and chain K, is made to rotate; the lugged sleeve E, is made to move laterally on said rod F, and raises or lowers the transom. And when said rotary motion is continued long enough, and in the right direction, the transom will be closed, and since the pivoted end of the lifting rod D, cannot be moved further, the continuance of the rotary motion of the rod F, willdraw the said rod F in a lateral direction and compress the spring I, on the one end,
and drive the journaled section at the other" end of the rod F, into the lock opening 0, provided in the projection on the L shaped rod L, thus securely locking the transom. The rotation of the rod F, in the other direction, will cause the lugged sleeve E, to move away from the pulley H, and the coiled spring I, will throw the rod F, away from and out of lock opening C. The spring I, also performing the other function of keeping the flange of the journaled section of the rod F, in frictional contact with its bearing, thus preventing any motion of the transom up or down unless actuated by the rotation of the rod F, by thepulley H. The chain is kept in osition by the lower pulley.
y suitable means may be used to give the rotary motion to the rod F,the one shown 1 being sim le and effective. Also the lug and the spiral y disposed slot may be transposed and may be made a spirally disposed lug on the rod, with the slot in the sleeve.
Having thus described In invention, I claim and desire to secure by etters Patent. In a transom lifter, the combination of an L-shaped rod provided with a, connection to permit lateral motion and carrying therehaving a lock opening therein, a lifting rod, on a pulley and a spring. 10 one end being swiveled on said rod, and an In testimony whereof I have afiixed my internally lugged sleeve, pivotally connected signature in presence of two witnesses.

tatably and laterally movable bar, on which WVitnesses: said sleeve is mounted to move, and having a l A. H. CUTRIGHT, spirally disposed slot therein and journaled W. E. 00D.
