Description

' UNITED STATESKPATENT OFFICE.
JOHN A. HESS, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
Patented Dec. 8, 1908.
comma-moon.
' "No. 905,876. Specification of Letters Patent.
' Application filed January 15, mos. sci-n1 n. 410,933.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN A. Hnss, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and count .of'Philadelphia, State of Pennsylva'nia, ave invented a new and useful- .Cutting-Tool, of which the following is a I and my invention was des' this objection at the same time providing an specification. v
My invention relates to a new and useful cuttm tool-and consists in forminfi the cutting e e of high, speed steelora 0 steel,
while t e'body of the tool is forme of ordinary Bessemer steel or openhearth steel.
It further consists of other novel details of construction, all as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
Figure 1 re resents a perspective view of a tool embo m invention. Fig. 2 represents a ongitu inal sectional view thereof on line x--c, Fig. 3. Fig. 3 represents a sectional view on line y-y, Fig. 2. Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in 'the figures.
' Referring to the'drawings: I have found in practice that in tools now in use on the market which are constructed wholly of hi h speed steel or alloy steel that the nose of t e tool is apt to break at the depth of the cut ed to overcome equal cutting edge.
Inthe drawings I have shown a construction for carrying out my invention but it will be. evident that changes ma be made therein which will come within tli e sco e of my invention and Ido not, therefore, esire v to be limited in every instance to the exactconstruction herein shown and described,
, extend' of the ordinary Bessemer or open hearth steel which is not only cheap but is of such a character that it does not break nor bend. In this V-recess I place preferably a trianglililar piece of' metal 3 whlch is formed. of igh speed steel or alloy steel, which is suitable and necessary toprovide a suitable cutting edge and which is a h riced steel. the different meta s lace a brazin compound 4 of'any suitabl d material an braze the two pieces together forming racticall a solid tool. The nose 5 is forme on a too the cutting edge" 6 of which, as will be seen from Fig. 1, being formed on the high speed or alloy steel 3 and because of-the triangular sha e of this piece, as the-tool wears own an the h h speed or alloy steel will always present su cient-service to form the cuttin 6, thereon.
ting-0E tool, aside tool, either right or left,
or a square or V-thread turning tool.
Having thus described my invention, what e FVhile I have shown in the-drawi s, .a i
I claim as new and desire to secure by Let- I ters Patent, is
.1. In a tool a metallic body, anda body formed of secured within said body andhaving a cutting edge extending to a side edge of said metallic body.
2. In a tool, a metallic body, and a body formed of highs eed or alloy steel suitably seated within an connected with said bod above the top of said metallic b0 y and ha acutt' edge extending to a side edge 0 said met lic JO A. HESS. Witnesses:
