Description

A. J. BOSTWIGK.
l STAKE HOLDER. APPLICATION FILED JULY 30,1906.
ARTHUR J. BOSTWICK, OF EAU CLAIRE, WISCONSIN.
STAKE-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed July 30, 1906.
Patented Dec. 1, 1908.
Serial No. 328,297.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR J.B0sTw1oK, of Eau Claire, county of Eau Claire, State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stake-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to stake holders for use in connection with the loading of stakes on cars and the object of the invention is to provide a holder designed particularly for use on cars where the use of bunks or the application of a stake-holder to a bunk or a cross timber is not feasible or is undesirable.
The invention consists generallyT of various constructions and combinations all as hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings forming part of this specilication: Figure 1 is a transverse sectional view of a car-body showing my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a plan view of a portion of the car -floor illustrating the position of the stake holder thereon. Fig. 3 is a de* tail sectional view showing the stake-holder mechanism in its locked position. Fig. 4 is a similar view illustrating the stake holder mechanism in its unlocked position and the stake discharged from the holder.
In the drawing, 2 represents the car floor and 3 a series of longitudinally arranged sills to which the iloor is secured. As shown in this figure a sill is provided on each side of the car near the edge of the floor and upon each sill at suitable intervals I mount a stake-holder, a recess 5 being provided in the edge of the floor to receive the holder and allow its outer face to be substantially flush with the edge oi' the floor.
The holder which I prefer to employ consists of a sheet metal box 6 having a flat inner face secured to the vertical outer face of the sill 3 by bolts 7. The top of the box which is left open is substantially lush with the floor of the car and a plate 8 which may be a continuation of the rear wall of the box is turned in over the car floor and secured thereto by bolts 9. The bottom of the box or holder is closed by a hinged angle plate 10 corresponding to the one shown and described in Letters Patent of the United States, No. 807,082,issued December 12th, 1905 to me and Cutler Lewis. This angle late which is hinged to the rear wall of the ox, is adapted to swing outwardly and close the bottom and open side of the holder side of the box is adapted to swing across the open side and hold the hinged plate in its raised position. A block 13 is provided on the outer side wall of the box near the top and has a recess 14 in its lower edge concealed by a plate 15 which is secured to the box wall over the block 13 by any suitable means as bolts 16. i
A s ace is permitted between the late 15 and t e box wall of sufficient widt to receive a hook 17 that is adapted to slipV into the notch 14 and hold the bridle in'its lockf ing position. A latch 18 is centrally pivoted between the plate 15 and the wall of the holder and is adapted to Vswing to ahorizontal osition and engage the lower edge of the hoo 17, and a lever 19 also centrally pivoted on the holder has a recess 20 in one end, adapted to receive the end of the latch 18 and lock it in engagement withvthe lower edge of the hook. A rod 21 is pivotally con nected to the lower en d of the lever 19 and extends across the car beneath the sills through a slotted plate 22 and within reach of a person standing on the opposite side of the car. A lug 23 is provided on the said rod to engage the plate 22 and prevent longitudinal movement of the rod 23 and the accidental unlocking or disengagement of the lever 19 from the latch 18.' When, however, the operator desires to release a stake and discharge the load, he will move the rod 23 lengthwise and oscillate the lever 19 to disengage it from the latch 18 whereupon the hook 17 will drop by gravity out of the notch 14 and the bridle swinging down to a vertical position will release the inner plate and allow the stake to drop out of the holder.
I claim as my invention:
1. The combination with a car iioor having a recess in its edge and a sill near said recess of a stake holder ittin within said recess and secured to said sil, said stake holder having an open bottom and outer side, and comprising a metal box having a flat inner 'face fitting against the vertical outer face of said sill, means for temporarily locking a stake in said holder and comprising a brldle adapted to extend across the outer side of the holder, a latch arranged to engage and lock said bridle, and a lever having a recess to receive said latch and means extending to the opposite side of the car for tripping said locking means, substantiall as described.
2. 'lhe combination, wit a car sill, of a and a link or bridle 11 pivotedv at 12 on one I stake holder secured thereto and having its upper end flush substantially'with the floor of the car, and having an opening in its side Wall to alloW the discharge of a stake therethrough, said stake -holder comprising a metal box having a flat inner face secured to the vertical outer face oi said sill, a hinged plate arranged to close said opening and means for locking said plate against premature movement and comprising a bridle adapted to extend across the open side of the holder, a latch arranged to engage and lock said bridle and a lever arranged to swing in a vertical plane transversely With respect to the car sill and adapt it to engage and lock said latch.
3. The combination, With a car having a longitudinal sill at one side of a stake holder secured to said sill and having its outer face flush substantially with the edge of the car and provided With an open side to permit the discharge of a stake therethrough, said stakeholder comprising a sheet metal box having a flat inner face secured to the vertical outer lace of said sill and an open top that is flush substantially With the car i'loor, means for locking a stake in said holder said locking means comprising a bridle having a hook at one end and a notch adapted to receive said hook, a pivoted latch arranged to engage said hook, and a lever pivoted at a point intermediate to its ends and adapted to swing in a vertical plane and engage said latch and means operated from the opposite side ofthe car for tripping said locking means.
4. The combination, with a car having a recess in its edge and a sill near said recess, of a stake holder secured to said sill and having an open side to permit the discharge of a stake therethrough, and comprising a metal box having a fiat inner face secured to the outer face oi said sill, and the top of said box being open and flush substantially with the car iloor, and the outer -face of said box being flush substantially With the edge of the car, a plate hinged in the bottom of said holder and adapted to close said open side, a bridle arranged to extend across said open side and having a hook at one end, said holder having a recess in its Wall to receive said hook, a pivoted latch arranged to engage said hook and lock it in said recess, alever pivoted at a point intermediate to its ends and having a recess in one end to receive said latch, and means operable from the oppositeA side ol the car for tripping said lever to release said latch, substantially as described.
In Witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this 24th day of July 1906.
ARTHUR J. BOSTWICK.
