Description

linitrd what WILLIAM HARLES, OF WASHINGTON, MISSOURI.
` Letters Patent No. 90,533, (lated May 25, 1869.
IMPROVEMNT IN MACHINES FOR THREADING- RDS, BOLTS, Gac.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the lame.
Tc all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM HARLES, of Washington, in'the county of Franklin, and State of Missouri, have invented anew and valuable Improvement in *Blacksmiths7 Screw-Cutting Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of' this specification, and to 4the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 'of the' drawings is a plan view of my inventiou.
Figures 2 and 3 are details.
My invention has relation to machines'for cutting screws; and y It consists mainly in a novel arrangement of devices, having in view a light. and portable apparatus to be operated by hand, by which a screw-thread may be readily andv easily cut upon theI end of a rod of any practicable size or length.
The letter A ofthe drawings represents a firm me'- tallic frame, arranged for being attached upon a bench by bolts or screws inthe ears b.
The letter O represents a sliding frame, cut out at its centre to-hold fthe dies, 'and adjusted by its jaws c upon tlanches of the frame, in such manner as to be easily moved or slid back and forth.
The letters h represent Vdies adjusted by the set screw i, in the sliding frame C, in the manner shown.
The letter D is a crank-wheel, aixed to a shaft, E, that revolves in hearings upon the side of the main frame, as represented on iig. l; 'and The letter G is a cogged wheel, also affixed to said shaft, that works in conjunction with the cogged wheel H next mentioned;
The letter H represents a cogged wheel attached i iirmly upon the end of a shaft that rotates in a journal-box arranged upon the end of the main frame, or, as is preferable, I cast the wheel H and the last-mentioned shaft inone piece, and arrange it in the jour nal-box, as shown.
The letter s represents a square opening that passes through the centre of the wheel H .and its shaft in a longitudinal direction. It is gradually tapered from;
its front to its rear, and is intended for'holding the rod, upon which a screw is to be cut,while the cutting-processis being carried on.
In orde'r to operate my device successfully, the operating person musttake a rod of iron that is fashioned with one square and one round end. The square end is held rmly in the quadrangular opening s, and
DESSES.
