Be it known thatI, J OSEPH L. FIRM, citizen of the United States, residing at Berwyn, in
the county of Cook and State of Illinois,
have invented certain new and useful Im provements in Printing-Machines, of which the followmg isa speclficatlon. This invention relates to printing maform a machine of large capacity and come paratively simple construction, character- 1zed particularly by means fordecreaslng the number of cylinders to perfect a given number of webs, and for so delivering the,
webs that they can be readily associated if desired.
The invention is embodied, in the present disclosure, is a sextuple press having three; decks, but the number of decks maybe increased or diminished, to vary the capacity,-
at will.
machines require a'large amount of floor space, and need more attendance than th machine disclosed herein.
In my pendingapplication, No. 398,625, I show a sextuple press in which thewebs areall fed in at the side of the machine, with folding mechanisms placed at each-end of the press. The present invention is an improvement on the press shown in said application. In the present case the webs are all fed in at the ends of the machine, and the folding mechanisms are placed at the sides. This is attended with advantages particularly with respect to. the delivery, inasmuch ascthe crossing the webs over the entire press, as in 557 ers or formers. This makes the whole turn the former application. This is much more convement, and is also simpler and cheaper.
It also permits an association of slit webs when required, with. turning, bars located outside of the frame of the main machine, betweenthe same and the longitudinal folding and folding mechanism more handy to begot at by the operator, and gives more space to work in, and permits quick change when desired. The webs run in a straight line through the printing couples, being fed in at the end of the press through end sets of printing couples and then passing through anintermediate set of couples, being printed on one side by the former and on the other side by the latter, and are thence turnedover bars and passed out at the side of the machine to the folding mechanisms.
I The inventionis illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a diagrammatic side elevation of the machine. Flg. 2 is a top plan View. Fig. 3 is an end elevation, of the right end of the machine.
In this specification the ends of the machine will be referred to as indicating the place where the webs are fed in from the rolls, and the sides of the press will indicate the places at one of which the webs are t delivered.
The ordinary sextuple press of the present time requires two printing machines side by side or end to end, and three decks high, with duplicate folding mechanisms, These- The machine embodies three sets of printing mechanisms, two end sets and one intermediate set, these sets being spaced from each other, and the cylinders in all sets being in line and parallel.
The endsets, as shown, each consists of three couples of form and. impression cylinders, one set printing one side of the webs A, C and E, and the otherset printing one side of the webs B, D and F, the rolls of which are indicated at the ends of the machine.
- The intermediate set consists of four form and three impression cylinders, each impression cylinder cooperating with two form cylinders to print two .webs at the same time,
whereby the six webs are printed on their remaining sides.
The web A is fed in over the rollers 1 and 2, to impression cylinder a, and is printed on its first side by form cylinder 1), thence passes over the roller 3, and under roller 4, to impression cylinder 0, and is printed upon its reverse side by form cylinder d, thence passes under the roller 5, over the diagonal turning bar-6, and between the rollers 7 and 8, and is slit by the slitter 9, and thence passes tothe longitudinal formers or folders. e and f.
The web B is fed in over the rollenidand under roller 11, to impression cylinder 9,;
and is printed upon its first side by form cylinder h, thence passes under the roller 12 and over roller 13, to impression cylinder 0, and is printed upon its reverse side by form cylinder 2', thence passes over the roller 14;.
turning bar 15, and between the rollers 16' and 17, and is slit by the slitter 9, thence to the longitudinal folders 7' and Z1.
The web C is fed in over the rollers 18 and 19, to impression cylinder 0, and is printed upon its first side by form cylinder m, thence over the roller 20 and under roller 21, to impression cylinder 12, and is printed upon its reverse side by form cylinder 2', thence passes under the roller 22, and over the turning bar 23, between rollers 7 and 8 and thence between the rollers 7 and 8, where it meets the web A, passing therewith to slitter 9 and formers c and f.
The web D is fed in over the roller 2 1 and under roller 25, to impression cylinder 0. and is printed upon its first side by form cylinder 9, thence under the roller 26, and over roller 27, to impression cylinder 11, and is printed upon its reverse side by form cylinder 9, thence passes over the roller 28. over the turning bar 29, and between rollers 16 and 17 and thence between the rollers 16-17 where it meets the web B, passing therewith to the longitudinal folders j and 7c.
The web E is fed in over the rollers 30 and 31, to impression cylinder 1, and is printed. upon its first side by form cylinder 8, thence over roller 82 and under the roller 33 to impression cylinder t, and is printed upon its reverse side by form cylinder g, thence under the roller 34, over the turning bar 35, thence between the rollers 7 and 8", and. 7 and 8, where it meets the web A and C, thence to the longitudinal folders e, and f. making four copies of twelve-page newspapers, with the webs A, C and E.
The web F is fed in over the roller 36, under roller 37, to impression cylinder w, and. is printed upon its first side by form cylinder '0, thence under the roller 38 and over roller 39, to impression cylinder 23, and is printed upon its reverse side by form cylinder a, thence over the roller 10, and turning bar 41, thence between the rollers 16 and 17 and 16 and 17 ,where it meets the webs B and D, making four more copies of twelve-page newspapers after passing over the longitudinal folders j and 73.
If desired, turning bars 100, 101, 102 and 103 may be used, with slitters 104 and 105, for slitting and turning the webs from one side of the press to those from the other, to associate them before passing to either of the longitudinal folders as shown at G in dotted lines in Fig. 2.
The form cylinders above referred to are provided with suitable inkers requiring no specific description. The turning bars are advantageously located in the spaces between the end and the intermediate sets, audit, will be seen that the delivery takes place side by side from one side of the machine, the webs being delivered separately through the side frame thereof. The cylinders and rollers of the printing and inking mechanisms, as well. as the supports for the web rolls, are mounted in the main frame X, which is or may be a continuous or unitary frame, the gears Z being advantageously located at the side of the machine opposite the deliveries; consequently said gears can be easily got at for the purpose of silencing any of the couples desired, or for other purposes.
The slitters and the double turning bars for superposing. and the longitudinal folders, are mounted in or upon small frames Y at the side of the machine. These frames are spaced from each other, and accordingly the parts can be readily got at and do not encumber the main printing lllQCllflDlSll'lS.
After passing the longitudinal folders the webs associated at each side, as indicated in full lines in Fig. 2, pass together to separate transverse folding and cutting devices indicated at Q, from which they will be delivered in usual manner; or they may be led toward each other as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2 and associated and. cut and folded. transversely and delivered. transverse cutting and folding any suitable mechanisms may be used, but I prefer the one shown in my U. S. Patent, 868,854, dated Oct. 22, 1907, or the one shown in my U. S. Patent, 868,918, dated Oct. 22, 1907, or that shown in my application, No. 398,625, above referred to.
In the present machine, the association of the webs is much facilitated, as compared to the machine shown in application, No. 398,625, the deliveries being adjacent to each other instead of at opposite ends of the press. This avoids the cross-over above the entire press, as disclosed in said application. It also makes more convenient the handling of the deliveries and saves space and working room.
The optional separate or combined delivery at the transverse folders, and the optional association before or after passing the longitudinal folders allows a wide variation in the nature of the product, and permits the convenient silencing of'any part of the printing mechanism for the purpose of decreasing the nmnber of webs and the subsequent association and delivery of the remaining webs.
I claim:
1. In a printing machine, the combination of one intermediate set having a plurality of couples located one above another to print a plurality of webs, a plurality of end sets on Opposite sides of said set and spaced therefrom, means to feed a plurality of webs in each. direction through said end and inter For mediate sets, and means to pass the said Webs separately through the side frame of the machine, from said intermediate set, including turning bars located in said spaces on opposite sides of the intermediate set, and means to optionally associate the said webs after they are so passed.
2. In a printing machine, in combination, a perfecting cylinder mechanism comprising several decks each having means to print a plurality of webs, and including a single intermediate and two end sets of couples spaced apart horizontally, means to feed a plurality of webs into the end sets and through the intermediate set, means to pass out the webs of each deck separately and side by side from said mechanism laterally at the spaces between said sets and at the same side of the machine, and means to optionally associate the webs so passed out.
3. In a printing machine, the combination of an intermediate and two end sets of printing couples, the intermediate set comprising 'a plurality'of double couples arranged one above the other with the cylinders of one couple cooperating with those of another, and each of the end sets comprising a plurality of independent couples arranged one above the other, the couples of the-opposite end sets being in the same horizontal space as the corresponding double couples of the intermediate set, and means to pass webs through said sets, located respectively in sand. spaces between the end and the intermediate couples, said webs being printed on one side 1 by the end sets and on the other side by the intermediate set.
