My present invention 'relates to'improvements in devices for removing the lids of boxes and other receptacles, and the object of my invention is to provide such a device which is particularly adaptedfor use in connection with receptacles for shoe polishing and other compositions, whereby the tight fitting lids of these receptacles may be quickly and positively removed without damage or distortion of either the lid or receptacle, thereby enabling the lid to be replaced on. the receptacle with a tight and even tit repeatedly until the contents of the receptacle; have been exhausted.
- To these and other ends the-invention consists in certain improvements and construction and arrangements'of parts as will here inafter more fully appear, the novel featuresbeing pointed out in the claims hereunto annexed. i

My invention is applicable generally to various forms of receptacles having tight Specification of Letters Patent.

fitting lids or closures which require considerable force and are otherwise diflicult to remove, and the i-nvention is particularly appllcable to receptacles or tin boxes lt0l' confitting lid that will effectually seal the contents of the receptacle from the atmosphere, and I will describe my invention as applied to receptacles ,ofthis character.
The; receptacle 1 is adapted to receive the polish or other composition, and this receptacle is usually stamped into substan tially the" form shown having a bead 2 and the annular, inwardly tapered flange 3. The lid or closure 4' is provided with an annular flange 5 formed to fit snugly around the outside of the corresponding flange 3 of the receptacle, and as the flange 3 is tapered, a very tight fitis produced when the lid is forced down upon the receptacle, and as the material of which the lid and receptacle are composed is somewhat pliable, an even fit is obtained between the" lid and receptacle that will seal the contents of the receptacle'fromthe atmosphere. However, when it is desirable to use the contents of the receptacle. it is usually diflicult to remove the lid by reason of the binding action between the flanges?) and 5 of the receptacle and lid respectively, and the sticking produced by the composition which lodges between these flanges, and by the use of my invention, the lid-or closure may be quickly loosened and removed at a single operation.
' In Figs. 1-4 inclusive, I have shown one form of the invention embodying a cam 6 arranged on the lnner side of the 11d having a bearing 7 projecting to" the exterior and provided with an operating lever or handle- 8. This cam is provided with a projection 9 which is arranged to coiipera-te with the upper edge of flan e 3 while a flat sharp- .edged spur .10 on the cam is arranged to and bottom of the receptacle as shown *1 Figs. land 2, one side of the cam engagi'i g the top of the lid to limit the downwaid motion of the handle, but when it is lifted as shown in Fig. 3, the spur 10 will be forced between the flanges 3 and 5 causing them to separate andthis will bring the upper edgev tion, and this handle when moved into operated position, serves also as a handle for the lid, and soiling of the hands may be thereby avoided. However, it is not always necessary to arrange the cam on the inside, for a construction similar: to that shown in Figs.
.' 6 and 7 may be employed, in which case a cam l2.is pivoted to the closure by the pivot 13 and is provided with an operating lever or handle 14;by means of which the cam may be operated and the lid or cover lifted and handled. The cam 12 is provided with a surface arranged to engage the shoulder or projection 15 of the receptacle as the handle 14 is operated, and thereby produce a separation of the receptacle and closure.
Various other ways of applying the opening device to different kinds of receptacles are contemplated by me in which the cams or parts cooperatingv with a portion of the opposite part may be arranged on either part of the receptacle and on either the interior or exterior, but in all cases, the device operates positively to separate the lid and body of the receptacle, the force produced upon the handle assisting the action of the cam, and this without damaging or distorting either part so that the operation may be repeated many times without impairing the close and even fit of the lid and receptacle, and this is essential in most cases to prevent evaporation or leakage of the contents of the receptacle.
I claim as my invention:
1. The combination with a receptacle and closure having cooperating flanges, of an opening device carried by one of the parts having a spur arranged to engage between the flanges to bend the innermostflange inward and a portion arranged to bear against the-edge of one of the flanges for separating the receptacle and closure.
2. The combination with a receptacle having a flange thereon, and a closure having a flange arranged to fit outside the flange of the receptacle, of an opening device embodying a rotatable cam carried by the closure having aspur arranged to enga e between the flanges of the receptacle an closure, and a portion arranged to cooperate with the flange of the receptacle for separating the latter and the closure.
3. The combination with a receptacle and a closure therefor, of an opening device embodying a rotatable cam having a portion arranged to cooperate with one of the parts for separating the receptacle and closure, a stop on the cam for limiting the motion thereof in one direction, and an operating lever for the cam.
4. A box, a cover for the box having a vertical flange a lever secured to the flange of thecover, and a cam inside of said flange adjacent to and secured to said lever and engaging the upper end of the body of the box and the inside of the cover to disengage the cover therefrom.
5. A box, a cover for the box having a vertical flange, a lever secured to the flange of the cover, and a cam on the inside of and close to the flange adjacent to and secured to said lever constructed and arranged to engage the upper end of the body and the top of the cover of the box to disengage the cover from the box.
6. A box, a cover for the box having a vertical flange a lever the contour of and secured tothe outside of said flange, a cam the contour of and on the inside of the flange, adjacent and secured to the lever and provided with a surface to engage the upper end of the body of the box, and a surfaceto engage the top of the cover of the box.
7. A box, a removable cover for the box having a vertical flange, a cam on the inside of the cover constructed and arranged to engage the upper end of the body of the box, and a lever on the outside of said flange adjacent and connected to said cam and secured to the flange, both the cam and the lever being removable with the cover of the box.
8. A box, a removable cover for the box, a cam and a lever secured to the cover adjacent and connected to each other and the cam arranged to engage the upper end of the body of the box, and the top of the cover to disengage the cover therefrom.
9. In combination with a box and its cover, of a cover detaching device, comprising a cam pivoted to one of said parts and adapted to engage the other, and a stop on the detached device to stop its rotation before the engaging face of the cam reaches the vertical plane through its pivot.
