To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE P. BALDWIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles, State ofCzilifornia, have invented a certain new and useful Transfer-Truck, of-which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to an improvement in transfer trucks and is designed to provide means for raising, lowering and transporting apparatus of any description. As illustrated such means finds application in connection with covered filtration plants wherein the mechanism for operating on the surface of the filter bed travels on rails supported beneath the filter cover. hen it is desired to transfer said mechanism from one filter bed to another it. has been the practice to lift said mechanism from its rails by means of pulleys and chains, swing the same around to clear the rails, lower the same beneath said rails, swing it back again and. finally deposit it on a truck and draw it out through a sluice gate into the other filter bed where the operation outlined is reversed in replacing the mechanism on the rails in said second filter bed. Such proceeding consumes much time and labor, both of which it is one of the purposes of this invention to obviate.
In the following I have described in connection with the accompanying drawings, a structureillustrating one form of my invention, the features thereof being more particularly pointed out hereinafter in the claims.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectionalview of one form of my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, parts being broken away. Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation on an enlarged scale of a portion of the apparatus along the line AB of Fig. 2. Fig. l is a detail view, on an enlarged scale of the hydraulic connection and controlling lever.
Similar numerals of reference indicate similar parts throughout the several views.
1 indicates the platform of a truck suitably supported on wheels 2, 2. A circumferential groove 3 is countersunk in the up-.- per surface of the platform and a plate 4, preferably of metal and having upwardly extending flanges 5, 5 is fitted into said groove. In the face of said plate 1 grooves 6, 6 may be formed to receive ball bearings 7 7 Resting on said ball bearings and fitted within the flanges of plated is a sec- 0nd circumferential plate or cover 8, preferably of metal, provided with a rack 9, engaging a pinion 10 on the shaft 11 of a motor 12 suitably supported on platform 1.
Mounted on plate or cover 8 are hydraulic lifts 13 comprising a cylinder 14 and plunger or piston 15 and provided with a water connection 16. Said connection 16 is preferably taken off from a pipe or hose 17 leading to a valve connection or control 18 suitably supported on plate or cover 8.
19 indicates a reel for the supply pipe or hose 20 which, as illustrated, is flexible. Said reel may be supported on the platform 1 by any suitable means. Supply pipe or hose 20 is in detachable connection with a main supply pipe 21 preferably supported on one of the side walls 22 of the filter bed.
23 is thedischarge from the valve connection or control 18. Said valve connection or control comprises a valve casing 2 1 having inlet port 25 connecting with supply pipe or hose 20 and outlet ports 26 and 27 connect-- ing with pipe or hose 17 and discharge 23 respectively. Plunger or piston 28 is adapted to be reciprocated in "alve casing 24 by means of a rod 29 pivotally connected to an actuating lever 30, pivotally supported in a bracket 31 on valve casing 21 one arm of said lever sliding on guide rod 32 fast on one side of the valve casing. The plunger or piston 28 is provided with channel or water Way 33 adapted to register with ports 25 and 26 when the piston is in position to admit water and with channel or water way 34 adapted to register with ports 26 and 27 when the piston is in position to discharge.
35 indicate piers supporting the groined arch or cover 36 of the filter bed. Supported from said piers are rails 37, 37 on which the wheels 38 of an elevated truck 39 carrying machine to are adapted to run.
The'operation of the apparatus illustrated is as follows :The platform 1 being placed beneath elevated truck 39 in such position that when the plungers or pistons 15 of the hydraulic lift are raised they will contact with said truck, the lever 30 is actuated to admit fluid and said plungers15 caused to rise until they lift truck 39 from rails 37. Motor 12 is then operated to cause pinion 10 to travel in rack 9 and to turn the apparatus until truck 39 is clear to be lowered between rails 37. Lever 30 is then reversed to permit the fluid to be discharged and the plungers 15 to lower against the water cushion
