Application filed March 14, 1908. Serial No. 421,264.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY W. VANCE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Inkom, in the county of Bannock, State of Idaho, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ironing-Boards; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention has relation to certain new and useful improvements in ironing boards.
The object of my invention is to provide a simply constructed ironing board arranged to be securely fastened to the projecting ledge of a table, the supporting standard being removably and adjustably secured to said board.
A further object of-my invention is to provide an ironing board of the class adapted to be removably clamped to a table constructed absolutely without any iron or metal parts to prevent any rusting or soiling of the fabrics to be ironed.
In the accompanying drawings I have shown in Fi ure 1 a side elevation of an ironing boar constructed according to my invention as secured to an ordinary table. Fig. 2 shows an enlar ed detail with portions broken away disclosing the manner of clamping my board to a suitable table. Fig. 3 shows a broken under view of the slotted end of the ironingboard, Fig. 4 an edge view of the standard disclosing the position of the oblique shoulders and, Fig. 5 shows an end view of the board and leg assembled, lookin toward the slotted end of the board from t e right of Fig. 1.
Referring by letter to the drawing A shows an ironing board of conventional construction provided with the slot 1 terminating in the 0 set seat 2 so as to provide the stop edge 3 as disclosed in Fig. 2. In conjunction with board, I employ a supporting standard provided below with the supporting edge w. Near the upper end this standard is recessed to provide the clamping jaw formed by means of the under surface 10 and the edge 5, this seating being rectangular. Along the opposite edge the standard is cut away to form the upstanding shoulder 7, having the forward vertical face '12, the standard being reduced at this point to provide a narrow neck presenting the surfaces 13, 13 as shown in Fig. 4, this neck being of a width to snugly fit into the slot 1, the shoulder 7 being complementary to and adapted to find lodgment within the seat 2. By means of this reduced neck portion I provide the two obliquely positioned stop shoulders 14 upon which the under surface of the ironing board rests when said ironing board is used in its clamped position. That portion 6 of the standard immediately above the shoulder is rounded as shown in Fig. 2. The standard is secured to the ironing board by inserting the reduced neck portion into the slot 1. In this condition the standard may be given a rocking movement in adjusting the ironing board to a table. The shoulders 14 act as a fulcrum, the slotted end of the ironing board and the portion 10 of the standard acting as clamping jaws by means of which the projecting ledge of the table is enga ed.
To prevent any latera displacement of the ironing board while in use I cut away a portion of the board above near the slotted end to provide the transverse stop shoulder 15 adapted to engage the edge of the table as disclosed inFigs. 1 and 5.
The device is neat and simple of construction and it is of course understood that the ironing boards may be made of various sizes.
And having thus described my said invention, what I claim and desire to secure by U. S. Letters Patent is The combination with an ironing board having a slot at one end, terminating in a rectangular seat, of a standard having two oblique shoulders, a reduced neck portion extending from said shoulders, adapted to work into said slot, and a shoulder complementary to said seat, said standard being cut away at the upper end to provide a clamping jaw, as set forth.
