Description

w. 'N. swAm, h PRINTERS IMPLEMENT. APPLICATION FILED APR. 9, 1908.
Patented Nov.]24,'190 8.
anuenl'oz UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM N. SWAIN, OF MERIDIAN, MISSISSIPPI, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO EUGENUS A. PHILLIPS, OF MERIDIAN, MISSISSIPPI.
PRINTERS IMPLEMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 24L, 1908.
To all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that I, WVILLIAM N. SWAIN, citizen of the United States, residing at Meridian, in the county of Lauderdale and State of Mississippi, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Printers Implements, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention provides a tool particularly adapted for use in job printing oflices for releasing the clamp holding the pad or backing to the platen and for tightening and loosening the set screws holding the grippers to their supporting shaft.
The purpose of the invention is to provide a tool or implement of the character and for the purpose aforesaid which will admit of the clamp being easily and conveniently loosened and the gripper securing screws readily reached when it is required to adjust the grippers according to the particular work in hand.
For a full understanding of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction and the means for effecting the result, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings.
Vhile the invention may be adapted to different forms and conditions by changes in the structure and minor details without departing from the spirit or essential features thereof, still the preferred embodiment is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the platen of a printing press, showing the application of the invention, the full lines indicating the implement applied to the clamp and the dotted lines showing the tool fitted to the set screw of a gripper. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the implement.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
The implement comprises a handle 1, a body portion 2 and clamp lifter 3. The several parts are preferably of integral formation, being constructed of the same piece of metal and may be either cast or drop forged. The body portion 2 is off-set from the handle 1 to admit of its being easily and conveniently fitted to the set screws of the grippers when required to loosen or tighten the same. The off-set at may be of any depth according to the particular make or style of press for which the tool is designed. The body portion 2 is formed in an edge with a notch 5 constituting a wrench to receive the head of the set screw.
The clamp lifter consists of a shank 6, head 7 and engaging lip 8. The shank 6 projects from the body portion 2 approximately at a right angle and the head 7 projects from the shank at substantially a right angle and terminates in the engaging lip 8 which latter is designed to come in contact with the inner or rear edge of the clamp when it is required to loosen the same. The shank 6 when the tool is in position, rests upon the platen and provides a fulcrum for the tool or clamp lifter. The head 7 extends over the outer side of the clamp, the latter being confined between the engaging lip 8 at its rear edge and the shank 6 at its front edge.
From the foregoing it will be readily understood that the invention provides a tool or implement of especial advantage in connection with foot or job printing presses to enable the clamp to be easily, quickly and conveniently loosened when it is required to change the pad or backing, or for any other purpose and also to admit of the set screws of the grippers being tightened or loosened as may be required to meet the exigencies of the case.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
The herein described tool for the purpose specined,,comprising a handle, a body portion ofi-set from the handle and having a notch in one edge forming a wrench, and a clamp lifter at the outer endof said body portion consisting of a shank about at a right angle to said body portion, a head projected outward from the shank, and an engaging lip at the outer end of said head.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM N. SWAIN.
