LLOYD VADER, -OF PITTSFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS.
HOSE-REEL.
To all 'whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, LLOYD VADER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsfield, in the county of Berkshire and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hose-Reels, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to improvements in stationary hose reels for use in livery stables, green houses and the like.
The object of the invention is to provide an improved reel having connection with the stand-pipe and to which the inner end of the hose is connected so that the hose may be readily wound upon and unwound from the reel and be at all times in communication with the stand-pipe.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists of the novel features of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved hose reel; Fig. 2 is atop plan view; and Figs. 3, 4 and 5 are detail sectional views taken respectively on the lines 3 3, 4-4 and 5-5 in Fig. 1.
In the drawings 1 denotes a wall bracket comprising an upright body or base formed at its ends with projecting apertured ears 2 to receive screws or similar fastenings and also formed upon its front, adjacent to its upper and lower ends, with forwardly projecting bearing arms 3 having vertically alined bearing openings to receive an upright pipe 4. The latter has connected to it a frame or support 5 for a hose reel or drum 6 and it is adapted to serve as a pivot for the frame 5 to permit the reel to be swung flat against the wall when the hose is not in use. The lower end of the pivot pipe 4 is rotatable in a stufling box 7 arranged at the upper end of a stand-pipe 8 in which latter is a suitable controlling valve 9. The swinging frame 5 is composed of upper and lower U-shaped members 10, 11, the former of which is horizontal and the latter inclined upwardly so as to brace the upper member, the arms of both members being united to provide bearings 12 for the axle 13 of the reel 6. The cross portions 14 of the U- shaped members 10, 11 are bent at their centers to provide semi-circular seats 15 to engage the pipe 4 and the latter is retained in Specification of Letters Patent.

said seats by curved clamping straps or plates 16 which are connected by bolts 17 to the portions 14 of the members 10, 11 as clearly shown in Fig. 4. The reel 6 is preferably composed of two heads in the form of wheels having rims 17a connected by spokes 1S to hubs 19, which latter are suitably secured upon the axle 1S. The spokes 18 are connected by cross bars 20 so as to form a drum proper upon which the hose is wound. The axle 13 is hollow or in the form of a section of pipe, one end of which is closed and the other end provided with a stuffing box 21 to receive one end of a pipe 22 which extends upwardly and inwardly and has its other end connected by an elbow 23 to the upper end of the vertical pipe 4. Upon the intermediate portion of the hollow axle 13 is a nipple 24 and a connection 25 for the hose. From the foregoing it will be seen that when the valve 9 is opened the water from the stand-pipe 8 passes up through the pivot pipe 4, then through the pipe 22, the axle 13 of the reel and the hose connection 25 so that the hose will be at all times connected to the stand-pipe and may at the same time be readily wound upon and unwound from the reel. Then the hose is not needed the reel may be swung to an out of the way position against the wall owing to the pivotal mounting of the pipe 4.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is:
1. The combination with a stand-pipe having a cont olling valve and a stufling box, of a wall* brac iet base formed with outwardljprojecting bearing arms, a verti- Cal ppglQtatable in said bearing arms and its lower end mounted for rotation in saidVV stuliing box, ahose reelhaying a hollow axle, a stufling box at one end`of`said axle, a hose c ounnection intermediate the ends of said axle, apiipne" connected to the upper end of the first mentioned vertical pipe and having one of its ends projecting into the stuffing box on the axle, and a frame carried by the first mentioned vertical pipe and having bearings for the axle of the reel.
2. The combination with a stand-pipe having a controlling valve and a stutling box, of a wall bracket having base formed with outwardly projecting bearing arms, a vertical pipe rotatable in said bearing arms and having its lower end mounted for rotation in said stuffing box, a hose reel4 having a holaxle, a hose connection intermediate the ends of said axle, a pipe connected to the upper end of the first mentioned vertical pipe and having one of its ends projecting into the stutling box on the axle, a frame composed of upper and lower U-shaped members having their arms converging and united and provided with bearings to receive the axle of the reel, the cross portions of said members being shaped to engage the first mentioned vertical pipe between the bearing arms of In testimony whereof I hereunto aiX my signature in the presence of two witnesses. LLOYD VADER.
