Description

'ELUTHORP & SLOAN.
.Coal Scuttle.
No. 90,437. I Patented May 25, 1869.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
JOHN L. ELLITHORP AND PETER SLOAN, OF OANAJOHARIE, NEW YORK.
CO'AL-SCUTTLE.
Specification forming part of Letters Batent No. 90,437, dated May 25, 1869.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, J OHN L. ELLITHOR]? and PETER SLOAN, of Ganajoharie, Montgomery county, in the State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Coal Scuttle; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification.
The drawing represents a sectional elevation of our improved coal-scuttle.
The object of the invention is to produce a portable coal-scuttle which will not spill coal or other contents when in use, and which can be made at an inconsiderable additional expense above a common scuttle.
The invention consists in the application to the scuttle of a pivoted hood, with side plates projecting into the scuttle, so that when the hood is opened by the pressure of the coal within, its sides will prevent a lateral discharge of coal.
A in the drawing represents the body of a coal-scuttle of suitable construction. This is, in front and rear, of equal height, but has its sides raised in the middle, but may be of other suitable form. The hood B is, in this elevated portion, pivoted by means of a pin or pins, (1, to the body of the scuttle. This hood is a flat or curved plate, forming a cover for the front part of the scuttle. From it project side plates, 1) 1), into the scuttle, said side plates fitting into sheaths or jackets that are formed by side plates 0, c, in the scuttle. The front edges of the plates 1) are curved on a circle described from the point a as a center. The front plate, d, of the scuttle is curved in the same manner.
Apin, e, projecting from each plate 0, through a slot, f, of the adjoining plate b, guides and steadies the latter, and arrests it when far enough open or closed. \Vhen the scuttle is tipped forward the coal inside will press against the cover B, and will force it open. The plates 1) will then form the sides of the dischargel'nouth, so that the coal can only fall out in a forward direction. As soon as the scuttle is put down the hood will, by its own weight, be closed.
,The sheaths on the sides are open at the lower ends, so that dust and impurities cannot settle in them to impair the operation of the hood.
The back part of the scuttle is closed by a hinged cover, 0, which, when opened, allows the scuttle to be filled.
The side plates, 1) 1), instead of being in the scuttle, may as well be arranged on the outer side of the same, in which case, of course, the sheaths are also on the outer side.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A coal-scuttle provided with a pivoted hood, B, which has side plates, 1) 1), extending into thescuttle, to prevent the lateral discharge of the contents, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The pivoted hood B, whose sides work in sheaths of the scuttle, substantially as herein set forth and described, to operate as specified.
3. The hinged cover 0, when arranged in combination with the scuttle A and hood B, substantially as herein set forth and described.
The above specification of our invention signed by us this 29th day of March, 1869.
