Description

GEORGE R. MOORE.
ove Gr ates improvement in St #atented Sep. 12,1871a UNITED STATES GEORGE E. MOORE, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN STOVE-GRATES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 118,874, dated September 12, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE R. MOORE, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Stove-Grates, of which the following is a specification:
The object of my invention is to improve upon a former invention of mine in stoves, patented January 25, 1870, mainly by simplifying the combinations of the necessary machinery for discharging the cinders and ashes from or through the fire-beds or grates of coal-stoves and heaters.
Figure 1 is a side View of the grate hanging in an open frame so as to show its natural position in a stove; also, a fire-chamber is shown above it in its natural place. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same. Fig. 3 is a top view of the grate and frame, with the firechamber omitted. Fig. 4 is a top view of the grate, and designed to show the sliding bottom about three-fourths open. Fig. 5 shows that the sliding bottom may have journals at one edge, to serve the double purpose of supports to it in sliding and of points for it to hinge upon should it be desired to disconnect the other edge from the shaft or shank a, which operates both it and the grate.
A groove may be left upon the slide 1) to receive the shaft and the same held to the slide by a pin, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 5. b is a solid sliding bottom, surrounded in this instance by a kind of basket-grate. It is operated by the handle or shank a. When a is drawn out the central space it fills, as a bottom to the basketgrate, is left open. When it is desired to vibrate the grate the shaft a is to be moved back and forth horizontally, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 4.. c is a part of the frame-work of the grate through which the handle of the slide passes. d d are hanging-bars or links, upon which the grate is suspended. This mode of hanging the grate gives peculiar freedom to it in vibrating.
I claim as my invention- 1. The sliding bottom I), in combination with an outlying rim or grate to complete the fire-bed, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
2. The shank a, for the double purpose of vibratin g the whole fire-bed horizontally and of operating the slide 1) to let down the refuse prod-- nets of combustion when required, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
3. The construction of the slideb with journals or pivots at one side, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
GEO. R. MOORE.
